Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire. Carroll was the third child born to a family of eleven children. From an early age he entertained himself and his family by performing magic tricks and by writing poetry for his homemade newspapers. Charles Lutwidge was a great writer, a famous photographer, mathematician, and illustrator. Carroll entered Rugby School, in 1846; twelve years later he graduated with honors in mathematics from Christ Church College, Oxford. He excelled in the study of mathematics and writing. After he graduated, he remained at the college to teach. His mathematical writings include An Elementary Treatise on Determinants, Euclid and His Modern Rivals, and Curiosa Mathematica. Additionally, Carroll began to pursue photography; he often selected children as the subject of his portraits. One of his favorite models was a young girl named Alice Liddell, who later became the basis for Carroll's fictional character, Alice. He abandoned photography in early 1880s and focused on his writing. In 1865, Carroll published Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Seven years later, he published Through the Looking Glass. Lewis Carroll died in Guildford, Surrey, on January 14, 1898.

What a dissapointment this book was, having bought it online, I was unable to flip through it's pages first. If you want to seriously study the various illustrators of Alice, don't bother with this book. First, none of the illustrations are captioned and you have to look up the credits in the back. Yet the foldout page with pictures of Alice from many illustrators is not credited at all, including a lovely image by Mabel Lucie Attwell (who's images do not appear any where else in the book.)Ev...

Ms. Grundy ficou furiosa e exclamou: "Nunca! Nem pensar."

CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODSON "LEWIS CARROLL" Lewis Carroll, born Charles Lutwidge Dodson in Daresbury, Cheshire, on January 27, 1832, was the son of a churchman and the eldest of eleven children. His mother and father were first cousins, and unusually religious. At the time of his birth, his father, Dr. Dodgson, was the vicar of Daresbury, Cheshire (he later was presented with the Crown living of Croft, Yorkshire, and subsequently became Archdeacon of Richmond and one of the Canons of Ripon Cathedral), and was a distinguished scholar whose favorite study was mathematics. Carroll went to Mr. Tate's school at Richmand at age 12; his father having educated him until then. Carroll excelled in his studies and became the champion of the weak and small. He earned the reputation of "a boy who knew how to use his fists in a righteous cause." After contributing a story to the school magazine, Dr. Tate wrote to Dr. Dodgson that Charles had "a very uncommon share of genius," and "you may fairly anticipate for him a bright career." From Richmond, Carroll went to Rugby to further his education, and then on to Christ Church College, University of Oxford, his father's college. According to the terms of the studentship, Carroll was to remain unmarried and proceed to holy orders. Several years later he was ordained a deacon, but he never proceeded to priest's orders. Throughout his education, Carroll consistantly distinguished himself with honors, congradulations, and respect from his peers and mentors alike. He wrote, "I am getting tired of being congratulated on various subjects; there seems to be no end of it."

    Lewis Carroll. (1832 1898).
    http://www.warrington-past-present.cwc.net/lewis_carroll.htm
Lewis Carroll Home Contents Lewis Carroll is well known throughout the world as the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass . Behind the famous pseudonym was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematical lecturer at Oxford University with remarkably diverse talents. Dodgson's boyhood was spent in Newton-by-Daresbury, Cheshire, where he was born on the 27th January 1832, and in Croft, Yorkshire. He spent his adult life in Oxford and died at Guildford in 1898. Besides the Alice books, he wrote many others including poems, pamphlets and articles. He was a skilled mathematician, logician and pioneering photographer and he invented a wealth of games and puzzles which are of great interest today. Through his range of talents he has acquired great respect and has a large following. Charles was the first son, although not the first child, of Rev. C. Dodgson, Vicar of Daresbury and his wife Frances Jane nee Lutwidge. Not much is known about young Charles - or his family for that matter - during this period although it is known that the Dodgson's had a connection with Cheshire that spanned more than a decade and in the case of Charles Lutwidge this covered eleven years (1832-43) The "world", young and impressionable Charles Lutwidge Dodgson came into was that of rural Cheshire and it was a landscape and a way of life untouched by the great changes that were then occurring elsewhere in the North and other parts of the British Isles. No "Satanic mills" could be found there least not Newton-by-Daresbury and the immediate surroundings, and this was to be the setting for young Charles for the first eleven years of his life.

But the Barrister, weary of proving in vain That the Beaver's lace-making was wrong, Fell asleep, and in dreams saw the creature quite plain That his fancy had dwelt on so long. He dreamed that he stood in a shadowy Court, Where the Snark, with a glass in its eye, Dressed in gown, bands, and wig, was defending a pig On the charge of deserting its sty. The Witnesses proved, without error or flaw, That the sty was deserted when found: And the Judge kept explaining the state of the law In a soft under-current of sound. The indictment had never been clearly expressed, And it seemed that the Snark had begun, And had spoken three hours, before any one guessed What the pig was supposed to have done. The Jury had each formed a different view (Long before the indictment was read)
