BIOGRAPHY Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, or "Lewis Carroll," was born in 1832. From Cheshire the family moved to Yorkshire when Charles was 11. Home schooled early on, Charles was enrolled in Yorkshire Grammar School and the Rugby School. For his advanced study, he attended his father's alma mater, Christ Church of Oxford. A gifted mathematician, Dodgson assumed a Christ Church Mathematical Lectureship upon graduation for the next 26 years. By the mid-1850s he had published several comical and satirical poems and short stories in such national journals as The Comic Times and by 1856, he had also become a skilled photographer. It was also in this year that he published his first poem "Solitude" under the pseudonym "Lewis Carroll." The genesis for his famous publication

Lewis Carroll, preface to The Hunting of the Snark Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), was, in real life, the Oxford Mathematics Lecturer (1855-81), the Rev Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, or to his many young friends who knew him personally, Mr Dodgson. Lewis Carroll is derived from the reversed and transmogrified Christian names. Lutwidge Ludovicus Lewis Charles Carolus Carroll Born the son of Charles Dodgson, Archdeacon of Richmond Cathedral, Lewis Carroll was the third of eleven children. As a child he took an early interest in mathematics. On being told that logarithms was too difficult for a child to understand, his response was 'Yes, but please explain.' As a child Lewis Carroll produced the family magazine, where he showed his first interest in parody, word-play and puzzles. At Rugby, he was a diligent, but not very happy pupil. At Christ Church, Oxford, he excelled in his preferred subject, mathematics. Although ordained, Carroll never entered the church, though he did occasionally preach. Ordination was at the time, a necessary prerequisite to lecture at Oxford in mathematics. From entering Oxford at the age of 18 in 1850, Carroll was to spend the next fifty years of his life at Oxford until his death in 1898.

Logician; he was ordained as a deacon but took his religious career no further. Did you know? Carroll invented his pen name by translating his first two names, Charles Ludwidge, into the Latin 'Carolus Lodovicus' and then anglicising it into 'Lewis Carroll'. Critical verdict Alice's popularity used to be explained by the fact that, unlike so much Victoriana, the books were pure, amoral enjoyment - a position somewhat belied by the multiplicity of critical interpretations of Carroll (and confused by the accusations of paedophilia). While they are obviously not 'just' children's books, there's little agreement on what else they might be. Political (the Red Queen as Queen Victoria)? Freudian? Narcotic? Simply bizarre (one critical work, The Agony of Lewis Carroll, consisted entirely of searching Carroll's corpus for smutty anagrams)?

He lectured on mathematics at Oxford, but his fame rests on the fantasy novels Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1872). These books grew out of stories he told to children, among them Alice Liddell, the daughter of H.G. Liddell, dean of Christ Church, Oxford. An amateur photographer, Carroll photographed children. Carroll used the surrealistic settings of his fantasy world to question the commonly accepted ways of thinking. Unlike other children's books of the time, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland did not try to teach a moral message. Carroll also wrote poetry which have remained open to all explanations of meaning. "I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, sir," said Alice, "because I'm not myself, you see."
"I don't see," said the Caterpillar.
"I'm afraid I can't put it more clearly," Alice replied very politely, "for I can't understand it myself top begin with; and being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing."
    "It isn't," said the Caterpillar.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson is better known by the pseudonym "Lewis Carroll". Although he was a mathematician, he is best known as the author of Alice's adventures in wonderland (1865) and Through the looking glass (1872), children's books that are among the most popular of all time. They are distinguished as satire and as examples of verbal wit. Dodgson wrote mathematical works under his own name but for his children's books he invented the pen name "Lewis Carroll" by translating his first two names "Charles Lutwidge" into Latin as "Carolus Lodovicus", then anglicising and reversing their order. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson's father was the Reverend Charles Dodgson. Charles Dodgson senior was born in 1800 and studied at the University of Oxford where he gained a First Class degree in both mathematics and classics. He was appointed as a mathematics lecturer at Oxford where he held a Fellowship but, on marrying his cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1827, he had to give up his Oxford Fellowship. He then became a curate at All Saints' Church in Daresbury and it was in that town that ten of Charles and Frances' eleven children were born. Charles Lutwidge was the eldest of his parents three boys, having two elder sisters Fanny, born in 1828, and Elizabeth, born in 1830. Charles was baptised on 11 July 1832 in his father's church and grew up in a strict Christian household. His early education, like that of his brothers and sisters, was provided by his parents. He read mostly religious books as a child and an indication of his rapid progress is that he had read
