Lewis Carroll, (1832-1898)
Jabberwocky
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogroves,
And the mome raths out grabe. "Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!" He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought
So rested he by the tum-tum tree,
And stood awhile in thought. And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. "And hast thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!" He chortled in his joy. 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogroves, And the mome raths outgrabe.

Carroll, Lewis
English author, mathematician, and logician, best known for his creation of the immortal fantasy Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson in Daresbury, Cheshire, on January 27, 1832, and was educated at Rugby and at Christ Church College, University of Oxford. From 1855 to 1881 he was a member of the faculty of mathematics at Oxford. He was the author of several mathematical treatises, including Euclid Alfred Lord Tennyson and Dante Gabriel Rossetti . Apparently because his posing of children was criticized, he abandoned photography in 1880. The Alice stories, which have made the name Lewis Carroll famous throughout the world, and have been translated into many languages, were originally written in 1862 for Alice Liddell, a daughter of Henry George Liddell, dean of Christ Church College. On publication, the works, illustrated by the English cartoonist Sir John Tenniel, became immediately popular as books for children. Their subsequent appeal to adults is based upon the ingenious mixture of fantasy and realism, gentle satire, absurdity, and logic. The names and sayings of the characters, such as the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, and the White Knight, have become part of everyday speech.

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898)
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1878) were written by a gifted lecturer in mathematics at Oxford whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Most of his life he busied himself with problems in logic and mathematics. The first of his two most famous books was written to amuse a young friend named Alice Liddell, daughter of Dean Liddell of Oxford, an outstanding classical scholar. These two books have ever delighted both children and adults. They have become classics of English literature and inexhaustible stores of quotations. The immense attraction of the "Alice" stories is that the nonsense they are full of is in a peculiar way "logical nonsense". Their chief characteristic is an endless flow of elaborate games with words. Sometimes the game consists of humorously dislocating and recombining elements of familiar words. In Jabber-wacky, for example, the poem that Alice reads in Through the Looking-Glass, we find "chortle", which combines "chuckle" and. "snort", and "galumphing", an exciting combination of "gallop" and "triumph". Sometimes .the word-play is a parody of well-known poems for children as in Alice in Wonderland where "Twinkle, twinkle, little bat" is substituted for "Twinkle, twinkle, little star".

LEWIS CARROLL
English author (1832-1898)
Biography:
Charles L. Dogson was born in Daresbury (Lancashire) in 1832, son of a protestant minister. At the age of 18 he joint Christ Church, within Oxford University. Later, he got a degree in Humanities and in 1857 he became teacher at the University. From 1855 on, he worked at the Oxford Library, combining his librarian job with private classes, courses at the university and collaborations in literary reviews. It's precisely then that he met little Alice Liddell, one of the dean's daughters, for whom he was going to write Alice's adventures. In 1865, Carroll and Alice's parents were set at odds so he couldn't see Alice again until 1891. He met other girls who became his friends: Gertrude Chattaway in 1875, and Isa Bowman in 1887. After giving up his teachings at Christ Church, Carroll began teaching at a girls school in Oxford. He died in 1898, leaving his theoretical treaty Symbolic Logic unfinished.
Since he was 13, young Dogson devoted himself to publishing small literary magazines with his brothers and sisters, for the use of the guests at Croft Presbytery (Yorkshire) where his father preached. These magazines included his own writings, illustrations, poems and songs, some pages devoted to letters to the Editor and some short parodies of contemporary novels.
From 1855 on, and under the name of Lewis Carroll, he wrote poems for

One can't believe impossible things.
"I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." Alice came to a fork in the road. 'Which road do I take?' she asked. 'Where do you want to go?', responded the Cheshire cat. 'I don't know.' Alice answered. 'Then,' said the cat, 'it doesn't matter. Now here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that! I'm very brave generally, he went on in a low voice: "only today I happen to have a headache."

Lewis Carroll Lewis Carroll is the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who was born on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. Carroll was the third child born to a family of eleven children; his father was a clergyman in the Church of England. From a very early age he entertained himself and his family by performing magic tricks and marionette shows, and by writing poetry for his homemade newspapers. In 1846 he entered Rugby School, and in 1854 he graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford. He was successful in his study of mathematics and writing, and remained at the college after graduation to teach. His mathematical writings include An Elementary Treatise on Determinants Euclid and His Modern Rivals (1879), and Curiosa Mathematica While teaching, Carroll was ordained as a deacon; however, he never preached. He also began to pursue photography, often choosing children as the subject of his portraits. One of his favorite models was a young girl named Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean at Christ Church, who later became the basis for Carroll's fictional character, Alice. He abandoned both photography and public speaking between 1880 and 1881, and focused on his writing. Carroll published his novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, followed by
