Fires...Floods...Riots...Earthquakes...John Carpenter! Hollywood's Prince of Darkness Destroys LA by Ted Elrick photo by Gregory Schwartz It's nine o'clock on a February evening. The Back to the Future town square on the Universal Studios lot is serving as a different place in a different kind of future. Technically, production notes call it the "Happy Kingdom" sequence. But it could be standing in for Disneyland's Magic Kingdom gone to hell in the year 2013. A gigantic earthquake has turned Los Angeles and environs into an island. The town square, lit eerily by torches and oil drum fires, is covered with graffiti, broken windows and some 400 extras costumed as all manner of anti-social types, from bikers to gangstas. In director John Carpenter's world, this should come as no surprise. Since his 1976 film, Assault on Precinct 13 , the forces of evil have stood united. It's the forces of good who are continually at war with one another over what to do next. In the world of Snake Plissken (actor Kurt Russell), the lead character in Escape from New York who now finds himself having to Escape from LA , the "so-called" forces of good the police and government are sometimes indistinguishable in their methods from the forces of evil.

August 2001 Movie Review: John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars Rated R by Jim Jenkins Directed by John Carpenter Starring Natasha Henstridge and Ice Cube Remember that the title of this film is not just Ghosts of Mars . It's John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars . You know, the guy who brought you Starman Halloween , and Assault on Precinct 13 Ghosts of Mars will probably be remembered about as much as that last one is. It's your typical horror flick full of self-mutilating zombies, only they're on Mars. It's the 22nd century. Mars has been colonized and terraformed. Society is matriarchal... sort of. A group of cops (led by Natasha Henstridge) is sent to pick up an accused murderer (Ice Cube) from a prison camp, only to discover the camp deserted and the workers slaughtered. The characters must fight off a bunch of Martian zombies in order to safely escape the camp. Whenever Ghosts of Mars tempted me to be interested, it just got silly. The matriarchal thing could have been fascinating if it was either more subtle, more detailed (after all, what exactly does that mean?), or more relevant to the whole story. As it was, it was just plain hokey. Similarly, the sci-fi element was almost a throw-in. There's an intriguing background plot about ancient Martian inhabitants, but with the unwilling heroes running around in leather trench coats and sporting uzis, you feel less like you're on Mars and more like you're in Los Angeles.

INDUSTRIAL HAMILTON: A TRAIL TO THE FUTURE Locations: John Street North between King William and Rebecca Streets, Hamilton, Ontario Gurney Scale Company : 1856-1872, James Street North between Gore and Cannon Streets; 1872-1957, corner of James and Colborne Streets, Hamilton, Ontario Gurney Foundry Company: 1906-1914, MacNab Street North; 1914-1921, Jackson Street East at James Street, Hamilton, Ontario Brothers Charles and Edward Gurney arrived in Hamilton, Ontario, from Utica, New York, in 1842. At the time, Hamilton was a small village with few industries. The only foundry that existed at the time was the firm, which manufactured agricultural implements. Since the Gurney brothers were interested in stove products, they decided to establish their own foundry on John and Rebecca Streets. Meanwhile, Alexander Carpenter established a tin and stoveware store at the other end of the block (John and King William Streets) in 1844. The three men became partners in 1845 in a firm known as the Gurney and Carpenter Iron Foundry. In 1856, a commercial scale company was founded by Elijah Ware and Edwin Dalley, located at 100 James Street North. Dalley sold his interest to the Gurney brothers in the late 1850s, and the scale manufacturer became known as the Gurney and Ware Scale Factory (G.W.S.). Soon, the G.W.S. company found that it needed to expand, and moved operations to the corner of James Street North and Colborne Street. Ware retired from the business in 1885, selling his interest to Charles and Edward Gurney. The company was renamed the Gurney Scale Company (G.S.C.) and was established as a separate venture from the stove company.
