THE PIONEERS
The Earliest Writers in English on Homosexuality
Guest Curator, Eugene Rice, William R Shepherd Professor of History, Columbia University
This case includes the earliest writings in English about homosexuality, mostly male homosexuality. They date originally from circa 1785 to 1908. Six of the authors were British, one American. Four were heterosexual, three were gay. It is characteristic of an age of cant that most of these texts could not be published during the lifetimes of the men who wrote them, or were printed privately in editions of as few as ten copies, or were published for private subscribers only, or had to be published abroad. Such publishing histories document well the nearly successful effort to silence all public discussion of the sexual orientation and behavior "not to be named among Christians," as it was sometimes referred to. These pioneers bravely tried to break that silence. Case Displays

    Walt Whitman—Selected Poems 1855-1892
    A New Edition

Book Review by Jack Nichols Walt Whitman—Selected Poems 1855-1892A New Edition, Edited by Gary Schmidgall, St. Martin's Press, 1999, 530 pages, $32.50
A nybody who knows me is well aware I've always been a messenger boy for Walt Whitman. In the nation's capitol, when I began skipping classes in seventh grade, I found myself seated in the office of the principal, an Eleanor Roosevelt look-alike, Miss Bertie Backus. Wielding what I considered an effective 1953 shock-excuse, I told Ms. Backus I was gay. "If you're not going to go to classes, you should read Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, " she explained kindly. It seemed a fair trade. Freed by a principal's fiat from having to attend cloistered classes, I sat in the open air and dipped into the Leaves, first discovering Whitman's Calamus poems—the most extraordinary literary paeans to all-male love ever written. Whitman promised: I will sing the song of companionship…
I will therefore let flame from me the burning fires that were threatening to consume me,
I will lift what has too long kept down those smouldering fires

TO PAT ROBERTSON'S 700 CLUB: HAVE FUN! BE A RAELIAN!
Better You Should Belong to a Nice Space Age Religion
Monday, June 16, 1997 By Jack Nichols
Last week GayToday's top story told of its welcome TV publicity received from Pat Robertson's intellectually impoverished 700 Club, a daily gabfest for the spiritually deprived. The dorky televangelist's newscasters, in yet another of their inept attempts to cast aspersions on gay men and lesbians, clearly recited Badpuppy's GayToday Internet address. This was a major tactical error indeed, not to mention one that showcased typical CBN inaccuracies. Now that 700 Club members have been given access to Badpuppy's GayToday , it is time to provide them with a colorful and civilized alternative to the nonsense that has too long remained a staple of their TV diets. But more on this civilized religious alternative (one that has seemingly arrived from outer space) in a moment.
The Christian Broadcasting Networkon June 11 falsely announced that GayToday's continuing series on cloning meant support for the cause of human cloning from "a number of homosexual groups" who, according the erroneous CBN report, "want to go ahead" with cloning. In fact, polls indicate that only 10% of gays (3% higher than the national average) think cloning is A-OK. The Clone Rights United Front (CRUF) founded by Randolfe Wicker, a gay media pioneer, does not consider itself a gay group and no other gay groups presently support the concept of reproductive freedom through cloning.

Foundation benefiting gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender programs transfers assets to Dartmouth College
Posted 02/21/00 In a ceremony at Dartmouth on Monday, Feb. 21, the Edward Carpenter Memorial Foundation transferred its assets to Dartmouth for the support of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender studies and co-curricular activities at the college. Dartmouth President James Wright received assets of $250,000 on behalf of the college from Peter Saccio, Professor of English and Chairman of the Carpenter Foundation's Board of Trustees. The gift will enhance the already existing Stonewall Fund at Dartmouth, which pays for courses and lectures in gay and lesbian studies. It will also establish the Carpenter Fund, to help support co-curricular and extra-curricular activities carried out by student organizations. The Carpenter Foundation was established in 1985 by a gift from the late Dr. Ralph Elias, Dartmouth College class of 1932, for the enhancement of the lives of gay students at Dartmouth. The foundation was named after Edward Carpenter (1844-1929), an English poet and social reformer who is now considered a pioneer in the field of gay rights. Besides the generous bequest in Dr. Elias' will, the foundation has been enriched by gifts from other Dartmouth alumni; its trustees have been Dartmouth professors and alumni committed to Dr. Elias' concerns.

    Research Interests
Main research in recent years has been in Welsh writing in English, particularly the first generation of this writing in the 1930s and 1940s, considered as the result of cultural interaction between Welsh and English cultural traditions in this period; I have related interest in postcolonial theory. Main work has been on R.S. Thomas (I am Co-director of the R.S. Thomas Study Centre at Bangor) and on Glyn Jones (I recently edited his Collected Stories and The Dragon has Two Tongues ). My other area of research has been the writing of E.M. Forster, especially his response to the thinking of the late-Victorian Socialist and advocate of gay rights, Edward Carpenter (1844-1929).
    Work in Progress
I am currently preparing a study of R.S. Thomas for the University of Wales Press's 'Writers of Wales' series. I am also developing work for a study of the English-language short story in Wales.

    73. Queer Notions III Queer Left Legacy

The Queer Left Legacy and Marxist-Humanism by Jennifer Pen In a monumental collection of over eight-hundred pages, entitled We Are Everywhere: A Historical Sourcebook of Gay and Lesbian Politics (1997), Shane Phelan and Mark Blasius have helped to make manifest a tangible queer left legacy. From the French Revolution to the present, they show that les-bi-gay voices have emerged in tandem with revolutionary movements, engaging directly with the thought of Marx in their search for a total uprooting of this exploitative society. One of the impressive aspects of this legacy is the universality of les-bi-gay thought, and its consistent connections to other freedom movements. What would it mean to critically study and develop this thought within a Marxist-Humanist Philosophy of revolution? Raya Dunayevskaya, speaking about the women’s liberation movement, said that women have been not merely hidden from history, but hidden from philosophy, which means that women were recognized as force, but not as Reason. This compares all too well to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people, who have likewise been hidden; in fact, our liberation follows what I call the dialectics of silence and passion. This contradiction between passion and silence can result in both an invisibility as force, though queers have been an unacknowledged part of all freedom movements, and to an invisibility in thought.

This subject section has been created to provide broad documentation both on women's issues and Marxism, and also a space for women's writings that are significant, but transcriptions not currently volumous or organized enough to warrant their own section. Some of these writers are not Marxists, but are included for context or reference. The intention is to also include the cultural as well as political milieu in which revolutionary women have worked during their struggles. As with the rest of MIA, most heavily represented are classic texts. The few references to contemporary Marxism-Feminism are meant to be a gateway to further exploration for interested readers.
