Carpenter, Edward (1844-1929)
page: Edward Carpenter, a champion of both women's and homosexuals' liberation, was one of the great socialist visionaries of England at the turn of the twentieth century. Carpenter was born in England in 1844. His family was of the upwardly situated middle class, and his father, Charles, a former naval commander, earned a living as a lawyer and through investments in American and British railways. His mother, Sophia, patterned herself after the stereotypical vision of the placid Victorian housewife and spent her time tending to Edward and his six sisters. In 1881, she passed away, and Charles died a year later. Carpenter died at Guildford in 1929. Sponsor Message.
These rather typical details do not foreshadow the role Carpenter was to build for himself in Britain, for by the time of his death, he was to be thought of as one of the great socialist visionaries of England and a champion of both women's and homosexuals' liberation. Carpenter's life began to follow the course prescribed by his privileged station. He was educated at Oxford and Cambridge, and in 1868, began a career as a lecturer at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. During his second year, he was elected a clerical fellow and ordained a deacon.

Edward Carpenter , the son of Lieutenant Charles Carpenter, was born in Brighton on 29th August, 1844. The Carpenters were very much a naval family. Both of Edward's grandfathers were naval officers and one of them reached the rank of admiral.
After studying at Brighton College , Carpenter entered Trinity Hall, Cambridge in 1864. He was ordained in 1870 and was appointed as curate of the Church of St. Edward. Frederick Denison Maurice , the leader of the Christian Socialist movement, was the minister at the church and he had a profound influence of Carpenter's political opinions. Soon after becoming a curate he joined the Republican Club, led by Henry Fawcett , the husband of Millicent Fawcett , and the future leader of the NUWSS
In 1874 Edward Carpenter left the Church and became a lecturer on astronomy, science and music for the recently established University Extension Scheme. This teaching involved visiting Northern industrial towns and cities.

and poet Edward Carpenter , the English poet, has been described as a mystic, prophet, reformer, socialist and philosopher, possessed of moral courage, gentle and sensitive in spirit. Peter Ouspensky, the Russian mystic and philosopher, corresponded with Edward Carpenter and translated one of Carpenter's works: "Love and Death - a study of human evolution and transfiguration" This was published in Petrograd in 1915. Walt Whitman, whom Carpenter visited, described him as "one of the torchbearers; an exemplar of a loftier England" and later "Carpenter is one of the altogether beautiful people who have made me welcome on earth". "One could not see Edward Carpenter, even in old age, without being enthralled at once by his beauty of person and beauty of voice. He seemed to radiate beauty because he had valued beauty and had stored it up in his soul all his life." (Edward J Dent) Photographs: Page 2. The young Edward Carpenter with his father and mother

APRIL by: Edward Carpenter (1844-1929)
    APRIL, month of Nymphs and Fauns and Cupids,
    Month of the Sungod's kisses, Earth's sweet passion,
    Of fanciful winds and showers;
    Apollo, glorious over hill and dale
    Ethereally striding; grasses springing
    Rapt to his feet, buds bursting, flowers out-breathing
    Their liberated hearts in love to him.
    (The little black-cap garrulous on the willow
    Perching so prim, the crested chaffinch warbling,
    And primrose and celandine, anemone and daisy,
    Starring the tender herb which lambs already nibble.)
    Month of all-gathering warmth,
    Of breathless moments, hotter and hotter growing
    Smiles turned to fire, kisses to fierce earnest
    Of sultry swoons, pauses, and strange suspense
    (Clouds and daemonic thunder through the blue vault threateningly rolling);
    Then the delirious up-breakthe great fountains of the deep, in Sex,
    Loosened to pouring failing rushing waters;
    Shafts of wild light; and Sky and Earth in one another's arms
    Melted, and all of Heaven spent in streams of love

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/frank.sierowski/ecc/ec.htm
Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) Edward Carpenter was a pioneering socialist and radical prophet of a new age of fellowship in which social relations would be transformed by a new spiritual consciousness. The way he lived his life, perhaps even more than his extensive writings, was the essence of his message. It is perhaps not surprising that his reputation faded quickly after his death, as he lived much of his life modestly spreading his message by personal contact and example rather than by major literary works or through a national political career. He has been described as having that unusual combination of qualities: charisma with modesty. His ideas became immensely influential during the early years of the Socialist movement in Britain: perhaps Carpenter's most widely remembered legacy to the Socialist and Co-operative movements was his anthem England Arise ! but it is his writings on the subject of homosexuality and his open espousal of this identity that makes him unique.
Leaves of Grass . Whitman's democratic poetry provided the spark that set Carpenter on the path of socialism and which led to the extraordinary changes in his life.
In 1873, while returning from Cannes, a vision of a different life flashed before him
