Mill , Tennyson, Browning, Dickens , Ruskin, and many others idolized him. George Eliot believed that even if all Carlyle's books were burnt, "it would be only like cutting down an oak after its acorns have sown a forest. For there is hardly a superior or active mind of this generation that has not been modified by Carlyle's writings; there has hardly been an English book written for the last ten or twelve years that would not have been different if Carlyle had not lived." Thomas Carlyle (17)

Thomas Carlyle, 1795 - 1881
Thomas Carlyle was a British essayist and biographer whose reputation and influence were immense in the New England Transcendentalist circle. His attraction to the Transcendentalists stemmed from his essays in the Edinburgh Review , especially "State of German Literature" (1827), "Signs of the Times" (1829), and "Characteristics" (1831), as well as several in the Foreign Review . These essays introduced Americans to German writers and philosophers such as Immanuel Kant Johann Gottlieb Fichte Friedrich Schiller Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ... Jean Paul Richter , and Novalis . Carlyle's ideas, borrowed from German idealism, spurred James Freeman Clarke and Margaret Fuller to study German, and they caused George Ripley to excitedly announce his discovery of "the untold treasures of German thought." Ralph Waldo Emerson , too, found a congenial spirit in Carlyle and arranged for the first publication of his Sartor Resartus in 1836. Carlyle has been written about as follows by Octavius Brooks Frothingham , the first historian of American Transcendentalism
Had Carlyle been more of a philosopher and less of a preacher, more a thinker and less a character, more a patient toiler after truth, and less a man of letters, his first intellectual impulse might have lasted. As it was, the reaction came precisely in middle life, and the apostle of transcendental ideas became the champion of Force. His Transcendentalism seems to have been a thing of sentiment rather than of conviction. A man of tremendous strength of feeling, his youth, as is the case with men of feeling, was romantic, enthusiastic, hopeful, exuberant; his manhood, as is also the case with men of feeling, was wilful and overbearing, with sadness deepening into moroseness and unhopefulness verging towards despair.

Another blue day: Think, wilt thou let it Slip useless away? Thomas Carlyle Thomas Carlyle (1795 – 1881), best known as a writer, was primarily a historian and essayist. His father was a small farmer in Scotland, and Thomas was educated at the University of Edinburgh where he showed particular promise in mathematics. Following graduation worked as a teacher in that field for five years. Unhappy with teaching, Thomas returned to Edinburgh University to study law in 1819. He spent three unhappy years there, eventually deciding that he would change direction again. He remained at Edinburgh University where he engaged in a serious study of German literature, J. W. von Goethe in particular. It was during this period that he turned to history and literature for which he is famed. Carlyle held a number of posts as a tutor after leaving Edinburgh University, having no fixed base. He married one of his pupils in 1826 and he began to write but found no publisher. In 1834 he and his wife moved to London, where in 1837 he published a history of the French Revolution, which received both serious acclaim and popular success. He had a very high regard for strength combined with a belief in a God-given mission, and regarded Oliver Cromwell as the greatest English example of his ideal man. He produced a four volume Oliver Cromwell’s Letters and Speeches; With Elucidations in 1845. He was installed as rector of Edinburgh University in April 1866, and his speech at his installation was published later that year as
