Carlyle, Thomas (1795-1881), Scottish essayist and historian, who was an influential social critic. After a trip to Paris and London, he returned to Scotland and wrote for the Edinburgh Review, a literary periodical. In 1826 Carlyle married Jane Baillie Welsh, a writer, whom he had met in 1821. After 1828 the Carlyles lived on a farm in Craigenputtock, Scotland, where Carlyle wrote a philosophical satire, Sartor Resartus (The Tailor Retailored). The work, first published between 1833 and 1834 in Fraser's Magazine, is partly autobiographical. In the guise of a "philosophy of clothes," Carlyle comments on the falseness of material wealth; and in the form of a philosophical romance, he details the crises in his life and affirms his spiritual idealism. In the satire, Carlyle emerged as a social critic deeply concerned with the living conditions of British workers. At the farm he also wrote some of his most distinguished essays, and he established a lifelong friendship with the American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. In 1834 Carlyle moved to the Chelsea section of London, where he soon became known as the Sage of Chelsea and was a member of a literary circle that included the essayists Leigh Hunt and John Stuart Mill.

Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881)
Though his essays and histories do not command the attention today that they did in the Victorian era, the world of literature owes an enormous debt to Thomas Carlyle, from Ecclefechan in the Scottish Lowlands. In 1837, Carlyle gave us the great masterpiece of historical writing, The French Revolution. Early in his career as a teacher, Carlyle read extensively in English, German and French literature, becoming heavily influenced by Gibbon, Hume, Voltaire and Mme de Stael. His biography of Schiller appeared in The London Magazine (1823-4) and he also translated part of Goethe's Wilhelm Meister to satisfy a growing demand for works on German culture.
Many of Carlyle's articles were published in The Edinburgh Review (late 1820's), some of them dealing with contemporary social problems. During this time, he wrote essays on Goethe, published his revolutionary Sartor Resartus, followed by Voltaire, Diderot and The Diamond Necklace. It was only after he moved to London in 1834 and he published his history of the French Revolution, that Carlyle achieved worldwide fame.
As historian, social reformer and prophet, Carlyle has few equals. His whole philosophy was influenced by his idea of the Divine Will, proof of which is the duty of the poet and historian to express. His writings try to explain what has motivated human behaviour through the ages. One of Carlyle's most remembered lines: "No great man lives in vain. The history of the world is but the biography of great men."

Thomas Carlyle Quotes
Every noble work is at first impossible. Music is well said to be the speech of angels. Every new opinion at its starting is precisely a minority of one. A man lives by believing in something, not by debating and arguing about many things. The crash of the whole solar and stellar systems could only kill you once. No man who has once heartily and wholly laughed can be altogether irreclaimably bad. It is not a lucky word, this name "impossible"; no good comes of those who have it so often in their mouths. No great man lives in vain. The history of the world is but the biography of men. A great man shows his greatness by the way he treats little men. The courage we desire and prize is not the courage to die decently, but to live manfully. Nothing stops the man who desires to achieve. Every obstacle is simply a course to develop his achievement muscle. Our grand business in life is not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what clearly lies at hand. A man lives by believing in something, not by debating and arguing about many things.

Famous Scots
- Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) Carlyle was born on 4 December 1795 in a cottage in Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire. After school in Annan he went to Edinburgh University to study mathematics. He had originally been destined for the church but although he never lost the piety instilled in him as a child, he could not accept the biblical foundations of Christianity. He returned to Annan as a schoolmaster and later became a tutor but his monumental intellect and enquiring mind diverted him into the life of an author, initially a number of relatively minor biographies for Brewster's Edinburgh encyclopedia. Carlyle married in 1826. It was to be a stormy relationship due to Carlyle's fiery temper and her quick wit and vitriolic tongue, but they remained close till the end of their lives. In 1828 the Carlyles moved to a moorland farmhouse of Craigenputtock where for six years Carlyle produced a large number of books (including essays on Burns, Voltaire and Boswell's Life of Johnson) and developed his literary style. In 1834 Carlyle and his wife moved to No5 Cheyne Row in Chelsea, London and he began one of his greatest works "The French Revolution". Carlyle was fanatical about researching original documents and often fought the establishment to be allowed to view these. He worked for a year on his masterpiece and passed the first volume to a friend to look over. But a careless servant then burnt the entire document! Lesser men would have despaired but he set to and wrote it again - the third volume was completed in January 1837 and Carlyle wrote "You have not for a hundred years any book that comes more direct and flaming from the heart of a living man".
