Campanella, Tommaso [t O O Pronunciation Key Campanella, Tommaso , Italian Renaissance philosopher and writer. He entered the Dominican order at the age of 15, and although he was frequently in trouble with the authorities, he never left the church. Imprisoned in 1599 on the grounds that he was plotting against the Spanish rule of Naples, he was released in 1626 on the representation of Pope Urban VIII. His best-known work is Civitas solis (1623, tr. The City of the Sun ), an account of a utopian society that closely follows the pattern of Plato's Republic. Although he retained much of scholasticism and insisted on the preeminence of faith in matters of theology, he emphasized perception and experiment as the media of science. His importance, like that of Francis Bacon and Bruno, depends largely on his anticipation of what came to be the scientific attitude of empiricism. Si dedica con fervore, e di nascosto, alla lettura di Erasmo, Marsilio Ficino, Telesio, tutti autori che criticano il pensiero aristotelico , lo scolasticismo conventuale e la corruzione della Chiesa. Per queste idee, Campanella viene trasferito in meditazione coatta nel convento di Altomonte. Tommaso Campanella (1568/1639). "Así España descubrió el Nuevo Mundo para que todas las naciones estuvieran sometidas a una sola ley." Giovanni Domenico Campanella nació el 5 de septiembre de 1568 en Stilo (Calabria). En 1582 ingresó como fray Tommaso en el convento de Santo Domingo de Placanica. Estudió teología y filosofía en Morgeto y Nicastro, demostrando admiración por la física naturalista y el antiaristotelismo de Telesio. En 1589 fue, junto con un rabino israelita y sin conocimiento de sus superiores, a Nápoles, donde se introdujo en la magia y el naturalismo de Gian Battista Porta. En 1591 publicó su primera obra Philosophia sensibus demonstrata en defensa de Telesio, siendo procesado por la Orden dominicana al año siguiente acusado de demonismo y herejía. Además de éste sufrió otros procesos en Roma, Florencia, Bolonia y Padua, hasta que es trasladado de nuevo a Roma, donde fue encerrado por el Santo Oficio en la Torre Nona. Tras obtener su libertad se retira a Stilo aparentando llevar una vida apacible. Durante su estancia en el convento de Santa María de Gesú planeó una conjuración contra la dominación española de Calabria para instaurar una república teocrática perfecta, pero fue delatado en 1599, sometiéndose a un proceso político y eclesiástico acusado de rebelión y herejía. En 1602 las autoridades española y eclesiástica le condenaron a cadena perpetua en el Castillo de Nápoles. Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639)
nasce a Stilo, in Calabria; studia Telesio, l'occultismo e le arti magiche,interessi che lo rendono sospetto nel convento domenicano cui era stato affidato per essere avviato al sacerdozio.Da qui fugge a Cosenza e a Napoli, subisce il primo processo per eresia e passa due anni in carcere. Poi è a Roma, Firenze e Padova, dove conosce Galileo. Con i suoi discepoli organizza una congiura contro la dominazione spagnola per costituire un nuovo stato ideale a partire dal quale inizi la rigenerazione degli stati cristiani. Viene nuovamente arrestato e torturato; in carcere comincia a comporre le sue opere maggiori tra le quali La Città del Sole , nella quale immagina una repubblica ideale, fondata su principi naturali. Dopo la liberazione si stabilisce a Parigi dove trascorre gli ultimi suoi anni e pubblica il suo capolavoro: la Metaphysica.

Filosofo dell' ordine dei Domenicani , tra i più grandi del Rinascimento . Il Campanella era nato a Stilo di Calabria e apparteneva a famiglia poverissima. Entrò in convento a 14 anni e mutò in Tommaso il nome suo Giovanni Domenico . Nel , caduto in sospetto del Governo spagnuolo e del S. Uffizio per aver preso parte a una cospirazione, venne messo in carcere, dove rimase per ventisette anni. Durante il tempo trascorso in carcere scrisse le principali sue opere Metafisica Del senso delle cose e della magìa Città del Sole e altre). La filosofia del Campanella è ricca di contrasti tra l'osservazione e la superstizione, tra idee vecchie e idee nuove, pur esprimendo con impeto il pensiero moderno del naturalismo. Nella Città del Sole è descritto uno Stato utopistico in cui i più sapienti sono legislatori, sacerdoti e maestri, e i cittadini, fin da ragazzi, studiano sul libro della natura mediante l'indagine scientifica, e ognuno lavora secondo la propria vocazione. L'organizzazione di tale a Stato è basata su principi morali che fanno della città come un grande luogo di educazione. Dopo il lungo tempo trascorso in carcere fra inenarrabili tormenti, il Campanella si rifugiò a Parigi , dove morì.

Tommaso Campanella was an Italian philosopher and astrologer who at one point in his life was denounced by the Catholic Inquisition for heresy. He supported freedom of thought in scientific investigation, much to the chagrin of those who espoused complete adherence to the "holy scriptures" instead. In 1622 he published Apologia pro Galileo ("Defense of Galileo") in which he promoted the Copernican view of our solar system. Campanella held a Neoplatonic view of nature and was very concerned that metaphysics be built upon a clear theory of knowledge.
