Giovan Domenico Campanella, born in Stilo, Calabria (southern tip of the Italian peninsula), was a child prodigy. At the age of fourteen, he entered the Dominican order and took the name Tommaso. His formal training in philosophy and theology was in Dominican houses. Early in his career he became disenchanted with Aristotelian philosophy and became a follower of Bernardino Telesio (1509-1588), whose great work De Rerum Natura (after Lucretius, see atomism ) influenced him greatly. Telesio thought that all knowledge is sensation and that intelligence is therefore an collection of isolated data provided by the senses. For this his books were placed on the Index of Forbidden Books after his death. But Telesio's philosophy, so influential in the south of Italy, pointed the way to empiricism. In 1592 Campanella published Philosophia Sensibus Demonstrata , or "Philosophy Demonstrated by the Senses," in defense of Telesio. In Naples, in 1589, Campanella came into contact with Giambattista della Porta, a polymath who was the center of a diverse group of thinkers who dabbled in experiments, white magic, and astrology. Campanella here was exposed not only to primitive experiments, but also to astrology. His thoughts had now drifted so far from Dominican orthodoxy, that he was denounced to the

TOMMASO CAMPANELLA (1568-1639)

Tommaso Campanella ritratto da Francesco Cozza, circa 1630. (Roma, Collezione Caetani). Scrittore e filosofo italiano. Nato a Stilo nell'Ordine domenicano per compiere gli studi grammaticali e filosofici. Philosophia sensibus demonstrata , 1591) una condanna da parte dell' Inquisizione nuova condanna dell'Inquisizione, per eresia ed infrazioni disciplinari, lo costrinse a tornare nella regione d'origine. Qui egli si fece portavoce del malcontento contro le ingiustizie sociali, lo strapotere della Chiesa, il dominio spagnolo, e fu tra gli organizzatori d'una vasta sollevazione popolare.
Tradito, fu arrestato nel e torturato. Ebbe salva la vita simulando abilmente la pazzia, ma rimase imprigionato nel Castello Nuovo di Napoli per ventisette
Frontespizio di alcune delle numerose opere filofiche di Campanella. Liberato nel , fu subito chiamato a rendere conto dei suoi trascorsi e delle sue idee dal Sant'Uffizio di Roma, e qui rimase in carcere per altri due anni.

Les écrits de Campanella sont denses et abordent tous les domaines du savoir de son époque : il avait le projet de réunir ses textes dans des œuvres complètes en dix volumes dont il conçut une impressionnante table des matières partant de la " philosophie rationnelle " pour s’achever par des " miscellanées ". Son objectif était de " réformer toutes les sciences en conformité avec la Nature et l’Ecriture " afin de prendre en compte les découvertes géographiques et astronomiques : sa Philosophia sensibus demonstrata

La vita
Erasmo da Rotterdam , Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) e Bernardino Telesio Philosophia sensibus demonstrata , tuttavia questi interessi svilupparono nel giovane C. un pensiero talmente anticonformista che egli dovette essere allontanato dal convento per non influenzare negativamente i suoi confratelli. Giambattista della Porta : essendo rimasto profondamente influenzato dal pensiero dell'umanista campano soprattutto per quanto concerne l'evoluzione di magia in scienza, egli scrisse il De sensu rerum et magia (Del senso delle cose e della magia), un manoscritto dalla vita molto travagliata: scritto in latino nel 1590, rubato da alcuni frati a Bologna nel 1592 e usato nel processo per eresia a suo carico, riscritto a memoria in italiano nel 1604, in seguito nuovamente in latino, e pubblicato finalmente a Francoforte nel 1620, e ripubblicato a Parigi nel 1637. Galileo Galilei Francesco Pucci , decapitato e arso sul rogo nel 1597.
