Mr. Renaissance archives discuss subscribe ... print page On Savage Morality September 25, 2002 Hello everyone, In last week Franklin was a deist, which means that while he believed very strongly in a Bible-based God, he had great optimism about the human race as a whole (in contrast to the recent Do Not Presume Me Innocent on the concept of original sin) and a very rational approach to orthodoxy. Our Literature professor prepared a short handout on the tenets of deism, which may or may not encompass all of Franklin’s thought, but are representative of this way of conceptualizing the world as a whole, the logical conclusion of the Enlightenment. Professor Turner writes: DEISM . “Natural” religion rather than revealed. Features: 1. No divinity of Jesus [though He was a good man]; no miracles.
2. Bible is a good guide, but not literal truth.
3. Is an afterlife, where virtue is rewarded and vice punished.
4. Humans have complete free will.
5. As products of perfect, rational God, man is potentially perfect and rational. Understand God by studying nature.
