Vasco Da Gama's heroic voyage: Implications for Sri Lanka: by Shihan de Silva Jayasuriya (Island)
This year marks the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's (1469-1524) voyage to India, which is rated as one of the greatest achievements of mankind. It is only comparable to Neil Armstrong's journey to the moon. Da Gama's breakthrough opened up the sea route to India and provided the platform for extensive contact between the Orient (East) and the Occident (West). He gave 'new worlds to the World'. The voyage in 1498 is significant in terms of what it set in train. It turned the Indian Ocean into a Portuguese lake in the century that followed. It short-cut the traditional overland routes to the Orient and undercut in a dramatic fashion huge and established commercial interests. More importantly, it marked the beginning of the Portuguese expansion overseas which spanned five centuries over four continents. Tragic
Camoes had the advantage of dealing with recorded history of which he was in part a witness. His experience and knowledge gave him an unique opportunity to write The Lusiads, which symbolizes the tradition of Portugal. The Lusiads was modelled on the classical epics of Homer and Virgil. Camoes's goal was to write a poem which should rival Virgil's Aeneid. He has left his personal impress on the Lusiads which does not appear as an imitation of the Aeneid. The Aenied is called after a man, Aeneas. The Lusiads is called after a people (The Sons of Lusus). The Portuguese were believed to be descendants of Lusus, (the eponymous hero of Lusitania), the mythical first settler in Portugal.

Aquela Triste e Leda Nadrugada Op. 112 (1959), are simple, fairly straightforward and modally inflected, sometimes calling, say, John Ireland or Frank Bridge to mind. is not a song-cycle, but rather a collection of settings composed at different periods between the 1940s and 1979 (and maybe later still, though we are not told). As such this set may be heard as a transitional piece since the earlier settings, such as Alegres Campos Canto de Amor e de Morte for piano quintet or his Requiem of 1979). Really well worth having, even if you are far from fluent in Portuguese this communicates strongly through wholeheartedness and sincerity. (OR CAMOENS) Born in 1524 or 1525; died 10 June, 1580. The most sublime figure in the history of Portuguese literature Dante , enjoyed an abundance of fame since his death; his followers have been legion, and his memory has begot many fabulous legends. Actual facts regarding his career are not easily obtained. There are but few documentary sources of information regarding him, and these are concerned simply (1) with the trifling pension which King Sebastian bestowed upon him and which Philip II continued in favour of his mother, who survived him; (2) with his imprisonment as a result of an assault made by him upon a public official; and (3) with the publication of "The Lusiads". Personal references contained in various letters and in his literary works, all of a certain autobiographical value, provide further data. Vasco da Gama Petrarchian Vasco da Gama's Vasco da Gama himself. From first to last the ten cantos of the work glow with patriotic fervour inspired by the genuine achievements of the poet's compatriots. but, side by side with chronicled fact, there appears also a somewhat complicated mythological machinery. Venus, the friend of the wandering Portuguese; Bacchus, their enemy; Mars, Jupiter, deities of the sea, and a number of symbolical figures play a large part in the fortunes of Vasco da Gama's nautical expedition, and at times the union of

An Adieu to Tagus
Waters of gentle Tagus, calmly flowing
Through these green fields ye freshen as ye flow,
On flocks and herds, plants, flowers, all things that grow,
On shepherds and on nymphs delight bestowing;
I know not, ah! sweet streams, despair of knowing
When I shall come again; for as I go,
And ponder why, ye fill me with such woe,
That in my heart a deep distrust is growing.
The Fates have e'en decreed this sad adieu,
Aiming to change my joys into despair,
This sad adieu that weighs upon my years:
Of them complaining, yearning after you,
With sighs I shall invade some distant air,
And trouble other waters with my tears. Translated by J. J. Aubertin.
On the Death of King Sebastian
His generous visage gashed with heathen blade,
His Royal brow with dust and blood all wan,
Came to the mournful boat of Acheron
The great Sebastian, past into a shade.

CULTURE Portuguese Culture Luis Vaz de Camoes (1524-80) is the most famous poet to have written in Portuguese and is a Portuguese national hero. His best-known work, The Lusiads, is an epic poem in 10 cantos about Vasco da Gama's discovery of a sea route to India in 1497-98. The Portuguese concept of saudade-nostalgia mixed with a melancholy acceptance of fate-finds its clearest expression in the songs of fado, heard most often in restaurants in Lisbon's older districts, such as the Alfama. Portugal has many ancient and medieval monuments and buildings, that include the Pena and Sintra palaces; the ex-royal residence of Queluz; the walled city of Obidos; the cathedrals at Batalha and Alcobaca; the castle of Sao Jorge in Lisbon; Roman temple ruins in Evora; and the castle of Afonso Henriques in Guimaraes, near Oporto, where the Portuguese nation was founded.

Poems on the Underground For Pero Moniz, who died at sea On earth I lived few years, and weary ones,
cram-full of stubborn, wretched misery;
I never saw my quarter century. I travelled across far-off lands and seas
seeking some remedy for life, some cure;
but daring deeds do not bring happiness
to one who, finally, has no desire. Portugal bred me in my dear and green
homeland of Alenquer; but corrupt air
trapped in my vessel, in this blood and bone, made me a morsel for your fish, cruel
sea, breaking on barren Abyssinia so distant from my fertile native soil.
