It is to be regretted that the additional matter which here appears could not have been inserted at its proper place. But though every effort was put forth to secure the desired information, the delay of those who had promised to furnish facts was of such continued duration that we were obliged to place the matter in this portion of our work. With this explanation these facts are here presented to our readers.

John Neal (23 August 1793 - 20 June 1876)
John Neal was an important voice in 19th-century literature as a writer and critic who wrote one of the earliest histories of American literature. Born in Portland, he moved to Baltimore when he was 21 to start a dry goods business. When the business failed, he became the editor of The Portico , a monthly literary magazine that also had a short life. Neal's first novel, Keep Cool, Written in Hot Weather, by Somebody M.D.C., &c., &c., &c. Author of Sundry Works of Great Merit, Never Published, or Read, From His Story. Reviewed by Himself - "Esquire" , was published in 1817. The next year he published two narrative poems, "Battle of the Niagara, a Poem, without Notes," and "Goldau, or, the Maniac Harper," for which he used the pen name Jehu O’Cataract. Shortly after Neal traveled to England in 1823, he met

Rev. 18 Dec. 2001, Gen. 337 DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRAVES OF ROXBURY, MA GENERATION 1 John Graves (1) was probably born about 1590-1595 in England, died 4 Nov. 1644 in Roxbury, MA, and was buried 15 Nov. 1644 in Roxbury. He arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in May 1633 with his wife, who died soon after, and 5 children. He probably arrived in the Mary and Jane . He was from Nazing, Essex, England. He married his second wife, Judith Alward (or Allard) in Dec. 1635. She was born about 1600 in England, and died 22 Oct. 1683 in Roxbury. John's mother must have come with him also, since Savage says she was about 80 in 1644 (b.c. 1564) and died 24 Jan. 1645. John Graves had a sister Lydia, who married Ford. The mother of John's daughter Sarah may have been a daughter of Thomas Finch of Hertford, county of Hertford, England. The Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English Emigrants to New England, 1620-1650 by Charles Edward Banks, Baltimore, 1957, lists John Graves from Nazing and Harlow, Essex, England, emigrating to Roxbury, MA. Savage (pp. 294-295) states: John Graves of Roxbury came in May 1633 with wife, who died soon after, and 5 children: John, Samuel, Jonathan, Sarah, and Mary, according to the church record. The
