THE CAUSES BY WHICH THE UNION IS ENDANGERED
Sen. John C. Calhoun
March 4, 1850 John C. Calhoun (1782 - 1850), who served the United States as a Cabinet officer in the 1820's and 1840's, as Vice-President under John Quincy Adams, and as Congressman and Senator from South Carolina at other times from 1810 to his death in 1850, was perhaps the most famous architect of the Southern states rights position in the antebellum era. This speech - the last one he gave in the Senate, actually delivered by James Mason of Virginia because Calhoun was too weak to even read it - articulates his final thoughts on the emerging sectional crisis. He died just a few weeks after this speech was made. An interesting website, with other speeches and writings of Calhoun, can be found here. To this question there can be but one answer, - that the immediate cause is the almost universal discontent which pervades all the States composing the Southern section of the Union. This widely-extended discontent is not of recent origin. It commenced with the agitation of the slavery question, and has been increasing ever since. The next question, going one step further back, is - What has caused this widely diffused and almost universal discontent? One of the causes is, undoubtedly, to be traced to the long-continued agitation of the slave question on the part of the North, and the many aggressions which they have made on the rights of the South during the time. I will not enumerate them at present, as it will be done hereafter in its proper place.

Civilian South Carolina Secretary of War, Vice President, Secretary of State, and U.S. Senator South Carolina's most storied national politician, John C. Calhoun served as Secretary of War, Vice President, Secretary of State, and finally as U.S. Senator, where his final act was to help craft the Compromise of 1850. He repeatedly warned that war was inevitable if Southern rights were not guaranteed. Calhoun's impassioned arguments helped to lead, predictably, to his native state's secession a decade after his death.

Father Jacques Marquette was one of the first Europeans to step foot in Calhoun County. He was born in France in 1637. As a young man he decided to become a Jesuit priest and upon becoming a priest traveled to Canada where he brought Christianity to Indian tribes throughout Canada and the Northern United States. In 1673 Louis Joliet invited Marquette to help him map the Mississippi River. They were among the first Europeans to travel the great river. Marquette was able to work as a missionary among many Illinois tribes. They traveled the Illinois River and spent time in Calhoun County witnessing to local Indians. Marquette died in 1675 but lives on through a University, railroad, lake, river, park, and several towns named for him. QuincyNet Home

Calhoun "To maintain the ascendancy of the Constitution over the lawmaking majority is the great and essential point on which the success of the [American] system must depend; unless that ascendancy can be preserved, the necessary consequence must be that the laws will supersede the Constitution; and, finally, the will of the Executive, by influence of its patronage, will supersede the laws ..."
