Calamity Jane (Martha Jane Burke) on horseback, 1901 Corbis-Bettmann (1852?-1903), frontier figure Calamity Jane was born Martha Jane Cannary in Princeton, Missouri, probably in 1852 (and possibly on May 1 of that year). The facts of her life are confused by her own inventions and by the successive stories and legends that accumulated in later years. She allegedly moved westward on a wagon train when still quite youngher mother dying en route and her father dying in Salt Lake City, leaving her on her own at an early age. During the following several years she wandered about the West, working as cook, dance-hall girl, camp follower, and bawd and doing whatever necessary to earn a living. In the spring of 1876 she ended up in Deadwood, South Dakota, site of new gold strikes, and became a bullwhacker, hauling goods and machinery to the outlying camps. It was probably there that she first met Wild Bill Hickok and knew him only briefly (he was shot dead in a saloon soon after). Other disputed stories put their meeting years earlier and even vouch a marriage (September 1870) and a child (Jean Hickok McCormick, born September 25, 1873, and allegedly given up for adoption). By the late 1870s Calamity Jane had captured the imagination of several magazine-feature writers who covered the colorful early days of Deadwood. In 1891 she married Clinton (Charley) Burke, a hack driver, after living with him for seven years. Beginning in 1895 she toured with Wild West shows throughout the Midwest. In 1901 she appeared at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, but was fired for her erratic behavior and alcoholism. Her last years were marked by poverty, and she died in Terry, near Deadwood, on August 1, 1903. She was buried in Deadwood beside Hickok.

Calamity Jane
Martha Jane Canary (1848-1903) was born in Princeton, Missouri. This hard drinking woman wore men's clothing, used their bawdy language, chewed tobacco and was handy with a gun. She traveled from Arizona through the Dakota territories during her rough life. At her death, the "White Devil of the Yellowstone" was remembered as a saint by the citizens of Deadwood, where she helped nurse the sick during a smallpox plague. She is buried near Wild Bill Hickock at Deadwood, South Dakota. The following information about Calamity Jane is from a statement concerning her by Buffalo Bill: "I do not know much about her early life. I guess nobody else does but herself. Her maiden name was Martha Canary, and she was born in Princeton, Mo., in 1852. A few years after this her mother died, and in 1862, the family moved to Virginia City, Nevada, which was then in the early days of the boom. An Indian uprising separated her from her father and brothers, and at the age of 10 she was thrown on the world to make her own way alone. "She had friends and very positive opinions of the things that a girl could enjoy, and she soon gained a local reputation for daring horsemanship and skill as a rifle shot.

www.arttoday.com Born about 1852 in Missouri, Martha Jane Cannary went to Deadwood, Dakota, during the Gold Rush in the Black Hills. There, after the 1876 murder of Wild Bill Hickok, she claimed that he was the father of her child and that they'd been married. (The child, if it existed, was said to have been born September 25, 1873, and given up for adoption.) She was noted her habit of dressing in men's clothing. She nursed victims of a smallpox epidemic in 1878, also dressed as a man. She was something of a local legend because the Sioux Indians left her alone (as well as because of her other eccentricities). She married Clinton Burke in 1891 after they'd lived together for at least six years.

NAME: Martha Jane "Calamity Jane" Canary Burke DATE OF BIRTH: May 1, 1852? PLACE OF BIRTH: Princeton, Missouri DATE OF DEATH: August 1, 1903 PLACE OF DEATH: Terry, So. Dakota FAMILY BACKGROUND: Calamity Jane was the oldest of six children, having two brothers and three sisters. Both of her parents were born in Ohio. Her mother died in 1865 in Black Foot, Montana after the family's five month emigration via a wagon from Missouri to Virginia City, Montana; her father died shortly after in 1867. Legend states that she and James B. (Wild Bill) Hickock were involved during the gold mining years in Deadwood, So. Dakota; however, there is no evidence supporting this theory: Hickock was married at the time, writing letters home to his wife in Ohio. After the gold mining boom, Jane wandered throughout the West and married cab driver Clinton Burke on September 25, 1891; he left Jane shortly after. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Jane set herself apart from other women in that she could work and socialize with hard and tough frontiersmen: from digging for gold, drinking in bars and dressing like a man, she was mostly accepted by them. As a young child, she loved adventure and the outdoors and became an expert rider at a young age. On her family's emigration trip, Jane hunted and worked along with the men and at a young age became known as a good shot and fearless rider.

http://www.poeforward.com/mrperfumery/deadgirls/historical/western/jane/jane.htm
Calamity Jane "Calamity Jane" was born Martha Jane Canary in Princeton, Missouri probably on May 1,1852. The legends as well as her own inventions confuse the facts of her rough and raucous life. Jane was a hard drinking woman who wore men's clothing, used bawdy language, chewed tobacco, and was proficient with guns. The extent of her lawless behavior was limited to disorderly conduct, drunkenness and prostitution. When she was quite young, her family moved westward on a wagon train. Her mother died en route and her father died in Salt Lake City. Forced to be on her own, this muscular, big-boned girl wandered the West, working as a cook, a dance-hall girl, and a prostitute, doing whatever necessary to earn a living. In 1875, she worked at E. Coffey's "hog farm" near Fort Laramie. Deadwood, 1876 In the spring of 1876 she ended up in booming mining town Deadwood, South Dakota where she got a job as a bullwhacker, hauling goods and machinery to the outlying camps. Deadwood is where she met Wild Bill Hickok and supposedly had a torrid love affair with him. The extent of their relationship is debated. Some theories include a marriage in September 1870 and a child, Jean Hickok McCormick, born September 25, 1873, given up for adoption. On August 3, 1876, Wild Bill Hickok was playing poker at Mann's Saloon #10 when Jack McCall slipped up behind him and shot him through the brain. Calamity Jane liked to say she tracked down the killer and had him arrested. The next day, McCall faced a miners court and pleaded self-defense. They declared him not guilty. Later, he was arrested for the Hickok killing by a Federal Marshal and brought to trial in a real court. McCall was found guilty. On March 1, 1877, McCall was hanged. He was buried with the rope still around his neck.

Calamity Jane (Martha Jane Cannary 1852 - 1903) Calamity Jane It´s often said about Calamity Jane that "she lived her life like a man". Well, that´s not quite accurate. Actually, she lived her life like she wanted to. It´s true that she often spent a night playing poker, she even performed hold-ups, but the money she won was often spent on some kind of charity or if she wanted to see her daughter back east. Calamity´s life has been told in many versions. A lot of movies have been made and even when she was still alive she was pictured as a legend in "dime-novels". Sometimes she told untrue things about herself and why not? She gained from it financially, and in a short period of time she was a part of Wild West-show owned by Buffalo Bill. Here she showed off her skills as a horse rider and a sharpshooter, and on one occasion she joined Buffalo Bill on a trip to England while her daughter was living there. All the way through her life, Jane kept thinking about her daughter in a way only a mother can and she never forgot her. in the latter part of her life she was poor and almost blind. She passed away on the 1st of august 1903, and like she requisted, she was buried next to Wild Bill Hickock in Deadwood, South Dakota.
