Sir Hall Caine
Thomas Henry Hall Caine was one of the best selling authors of the Victorian era. His books sold by the million. Six of his novels were set in the Isle of Man, some were made into plays and films. The silent classic "The Manxman" directed by Alfred Hitchcock is one of the few that has been preserved and still available on video. Though born in Runcorn, Cheshire, his father was Manx, his mother was from Cumberland.
Educated in Liverpool, he was trained as an architectural draughtsman, but became a journalist and gradually took up literary work. He lived with D. G. Rossetti as secretary and companion for the last year of Rossetti's life. This led to the publication in 1882 of "Recollections of Rossetti." His career as a novelist was born that year. Greeba Castle.
