The True Confessions of an Albino Terrorist, by Breyten Breytenbach
Schwartz, Stephen
BREYTEN BREYTENBACH, considered the best modern poet in the Afrikaans language, first received substantial publicity in the English-speaking world in 1977. At that time, he had been... ...But as his memoirs show, his Afrikaner family stood by him with greater loyalty than was shown by his adopted "family of the revolution... ...Breytenbach is no Mandelstam, and the comparison is specious: Mandelstam lost his life for writing a single poem, whereas Breytenbach, after participating in a revolutionary conspiracy, came out of prison safely... ...I did so, becoming the head of the Committee on the Breytenbach Case, based in San Francisco but circulating materials throughout the United States... ...Breytenbach's poetic style is a distinctively affecting mixture of surrealism and philosophical pessimism: his wit, and his austere figures, come across rather invitingly in English translation... ...An accompanying note from my European correspondent stated that Curiel had indeed maintained an "underground organization for training [in] guerrilla warfare, counterfeiting passports, instructing in coded information methods...

A STUDY GUIDE
The Rise of David Levinsky
Penguin Books 1993
By Abraham Cahan Study Guide by Susan Kittner Huntting INTRODUCTION
Published in 1917, The Rise of David Levinsky is considered to be the first American novel to chronicle the Jewish American immigrant experience at the end of the 19 th century. Almost a century later, it can be difficult to imagine the significance of this book at the time of its publication and in the intervening years. What became the book The Rise of David Levinsky originally appeared as four related short stories in the English-language ABOUT THE AUTHOR Abraham Cahan (1860-1951), the son of a rabbi, was born and raised in Vlinius, where he trained as a teacher in the Jewish Folk Schools. Steeped in the traditional world of Jewish religious life he, nonetheless, became a socialist. Fleeing the Russian programs of 1881, he arrived in New York at the beginning of the largest Jewish wave of immigration to America. He quickly involved himself in the intellectual and political life of the Lower East Side. Working odd factory jobs, he gradually established himself as a trade union activist and journalist. He also began writing fiction in Yiddish and English.

3) Thursday, January 25. Immigration and Shifting Electorates
Jacob Riis (1849-1914) began his career as a journalist in New York City and dedicated his life to trying to reform the tenement slums. His innovative use of photographic journalism helped raise awareness of poverty among city officials. Yet Riis did not escape the prejudices of the time that many native whites held against Jewish and other immigrants. Abraham Cahan (1860-1951) was a Jewish immigrant from Russia, a journalist, a novelist, and a socialist. Much of his efforts were focused on depicting the social, cultural, religious and other aspects of Jewish life in New York city in the Jewish Daily Forward , a journal that he edited. Unlike reformers, Cahan viewed the East Side with sympathy and compassion. The Populist Omaha Platform, 1892, articulates the great agrarian protest against falling prices, poor credit, poor marketing facilities, and crop failures. Novelist Willa Cather (1873-1947) celebrated the pioneer tradition of western prairies in such books as O Pioneers (1913). This excerpt from

ow many of us below the age of 60 have been obliged to experience an ocean voyage on anything even remotely less luxurious than the Queen Elizabeth II?
For our immigrant ancestors who crossed the Atlantic by ship, the crossing was often a gruelling, claustrophic experience, filled with a mixture of anxiety and hope. Most, of course, were obliged to endure the cramped and uncomfortable conditions of steerage class.
For many, the voyage was characterized by sickness and sometimes hunger owing to a lack of suitable kosher food. The travellers also felt much sadness at the thought of loved ones left behind - mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters whom they would likely never see again. They would have also felt great apprehension about what their lives would become once they landed in America or Canada - tempered, usually, by the great joy experienced when suddenly, after a week or 10 days at sea, land was sighted and the ship steamed into port.
Ships' passenger lists provide a few factual details about the voyages and those who made them. Such details, however, while highly useful to the genealogical researcher, tell only a small part of the human story.
