Spiritwalk Library Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.net Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts). It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia

For the foreign language learner there exist two important criteria of any didactic edition of comprehensive literary texts. These are, on the one hand, the quality of linguistic annotations and, on the other hand, a careful commentary in order to facilitate understanding. The following contribution is based on the assumption that the didactic resources available concerning Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 are insufficient.

Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 was first recommended for foreign language teaching purposes more than twenty years ago (cf. Noçon, 1977, second edition 1981). In contrast to Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale , there exist several resources which may facilitate the practical work of the language teacher. To begin with, a didactic edition of the novel was published by Norbert Köhn (cf. Stuttgart, 1991, reprinted 1995) and in addition to that, a volume of annotations was produced by Erwin Kastner in the well-known series Aschendorffs Vokabularien (cf. Münster, 1992). Moreover, Dieter Vater published a didactic edition, a

Taking Advantage of Latin-Based Vocabulary in German and English
With our Latin Loan Words chart.
All languages are influenced by other languages to some degree. English has always been a big borrower from many sources. English vocabulary reflects numerous new word constructions and loan words from Greek, Latin (Latein), French, German and Native American languages, just to name a few.
English and German are close cousins in the Germanic family of languages (see chart below), but they have both borrowed heavily from the Italic (Romanisch) branch of the long-gone Indo-European Ursprache (protolanguage). The simplified language family tree below shows how the Germanic (German, English) and Italic (Latin, French, Spanish, etc.) language branches developed from different ancestors.

(continuation)
PART II-D: Julius Caesar (100 - 44 B.C. ) Youth to Consulate Descended from an impoverished patrician family which had long been attached to the senatorial clique , Caesar's immediate forbears had fallen from prominence in the decades before his birth and there had been no Consuls in his immediate family for generations. The office of Consul - one of two men who, for a year, guided the Roman Republic at the pinnacle of power - was dearly sought by all noble families. Perhaps these factors influenced the ambitious young Roman in his drive for personal preeminence. Almost from the first, he turned against the established senatorial party and sought out the popularis or people's party. Caesar's father, C. Julius Caesar, was something of a pleasant nonentity; he died when Caesar was 15, having only reached as high as praetor, next to the Consulship. Little is known about him. Caesar's mother, Aurelia, was of the prominent family of Cotta and was apparently an exemplar of the disciplined Roman

Greek culture predominates throughout the Middle East. A form of the Greek language becomes the lingua franca for the whole region - the "Common Language" or the "Koine". Koine Greek is the language in which the New Testament is written. The land of Israel is in the path of the two main empires, Egypt and Persia, and becomes a pawn in the political struggles. All dates are approximate. Alexander the Great, born 356 BC, succeeded to the throne of his father Philip II of Macedon 336 BC. In 334 BC Alexander began the conquest of the Persian Empire

The Judaean Essenes Sect established their center at Wadi Qumran, near the Dead Sea and only 16 miles from Jerusalem, to await the coming of the promised Messianic Age. Their community is built upon the ruins of a Judaean town.
The Essenes practiced a form of ritual purity like Baptism except they repeated it periodically with some conducting the ritual daily.

Caesar, Gaius Julius (100-44 BC), Roman general and statesman, who laid the foundations of the Roman imperial system. Early Life: Born in Rome on July 12 or 13, 100 BC, Caesar belonged to the prestigious Julian clan; yet from early childhood he knew controversy. His uncle by marriage was Gaius Marius, leader of the Populares. This party supported agrarian reform and was opposed by the reactionary Optimates, a senatorial faction. Marius was seven times consul (chief magistrate), and the last year he held office, just before his death in 86 BC, he exacted a terrifying toll on the Optimates. At the same time he saw to it that young Caesar was appointed flamen dialis, one of an archaic priesthood with no power. The original hard-back book was written by one of the most renown and prolific writer-historians of his time, Jacob Abbott of Brunswick, Maine. It was one of a set of 32 volumes authored by Jacob and John Abbott, brothers, in the mid- to late-1800s. The set was re-published in the early 1900s, and not again until 2000, when GoldenWest Marketing undertook the project of re-printing 8 of these rare and genealogically valuable books.
