/ Republic to Empire Tiberius Gracchus Defies the Senate, 133 B.C. The Senate dominated Roman politics under the republican system. Competition among elites was channeled into political and military achievement, and respect for tradition kept dissent muted. This all changed, in the conventional Roman view, in 133 B.C., when a young aristocrat stepped out of the normal methods of advancement and challenged the Senate itself. That man was Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus (163-133 B.C.), whose father was an ex-consul and mother was the daughter of Scipio Africanus. His career was almost ruined when he had the misfortune to be part of an army defeated through no fault of his own, but he found a way back in: he would become a tribune of the people and take on the vexing issue of land reform. His pursuit of this issue brought him into conflict with the leaders of the Senate, made him a hero to the common people, and eventually led to his death. His younger brother Gaius followed in his footsteps and was killed by his enemies in 121 B.C. Mine own John Poynz
Mine own John Poynz, since ye delight to know The cause why that homeward I me draw, And flee the press of courts, whereso they go, Rather than to live thrall under the awe To will and lust learning to set a law: It is not for because I scorn or mock The power of them, to whom fortune hath lent Charge over us, of right, to strike the stroke. But true it is that I have always meant Less to esteem them than the common sort, Of outward things that judge in their intent Without regard what doth inward resort. I grant sometime that of glory the fire Doth twyche my heart. Me list not to report Blame by honour, and honour to desire. But how may I this honour now attain, That cannot dye the colour black a liar? My Poynz, I cannot from me tune to feign, To cloak the truth for praise without desert Of them that list all vice for to retain. I cannot honour them that sets their part With Venus and Bacchus all their life long; Nor hold my peace of them although I smart.
