James Branch Cabell
Burroughs kreierte die Fantasy als Massenunterhaltung in den USA, aber zur gleichen Zeit schrieb dort ein Schriftsteller, der im Gegensatz zu Burroughs die Werke von Morris und Dunsany kannte, Eddison lobend rezensierte und für den Fantasy keine Genliteratur, sondern eine literarische Ausdrucksform besonderer Art war, in der er Ästhetizismus und Ironie verbinden konnte. Cabell stammte aus einer alten Südstaatenfamilie in Virginia, die zu jenen angesehen, aber inzwischen verarmten Kreisen gehörte, die sich noch immer mit der im Bürgerkrieg untergegangenen Konföderation identifizierten. Sein Großvater war ein Schulfreund von Edgar Allan Poe gewesen. Nach dem College arbeitete Cabell bei mehreren Zeitungsverlagen, danach von 1902 bis 1911 als Genealoge und suchte in diesem Beruf auch in Frankreich, England und Irland nach den Vorfahren alter amerikanischer Südstaaten-Familien. Nach einigen Jahren im Büro einer Kohlengrubengesellschaft heiratete er 1913 eine wohlhabende Witwe mit fünf Kindern und ließ sich in der Nähe von Richmond als Schriftsteller nieder. Die erste Geschichte hatte er 1902 verkauft, und 1913 lagen bereits drei Romane von ihm veröffentlicht vor. Aus ihnen entwickelte sich die vielbändige Biographie des

        The Certain Hour (1916)
        • Criticism, whatever may be its pretensions, never does more than to define the impression which is made upon it at a certain moment by a work wherein the writer himself noted the impression of the world which he received at a certain hour. Sad hours and glad hours, and all hours, pass over;
          One thing unshaken stays
          Life, that hath Death for spouse, hath Chance for lover;
          Whereby decays
          Of hourly change begot,
          Love that is God-born, bides as God eternal,
          And changes not;— For this is the song of the double-soul, distortedly two in one,—
          Of the wearied eyes that still behold the fruit ere the seed be sown

    Cabell, Branch u l] Pronunciation Key Cabell, Branch (James Branch Cabell), , American novelist, b. Richmond, Va., grad. William and Mary, 1898. After various experiences as a journalist and a coal miner he began writing fiction. His early works, which are sophisticated novels deriding conventional history, include Gallantry Chivalry (1909), and The Rivet in Grandfather's Neck (1915). Many of Cabell's most popular novels are set in the imaginary medieval kingdom of Poictesme; among these are The Cream of the Jest Jurgen The Silver Stallion (1926). Cabell's novels are usually pointedly antirealistic, and many of them can be considered moral allegories. Although he was enormously popular in the 1920s, his highly artifical prose style and subject matter lost favor with critics and public alike by the 1930s. His nonfictional writing includes Beyond Life The St. Johns (with A. J. Hanna, 1943), and Here Let Me Lie See studies by J. L. Davis (1962), D. Tarrant (1967), H. Walpole (1920, repr. 1973), and L. D. Rubin (1959, repr. 1973). The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia

    Evidente mi ne konas la ĝustajn homojn. Neniu, kun kiu mi parolis, aŭdis pri la usona verkisto James Branch Cabell (1879–1958); pri li, en mia universitata biblioteko estas neniu spuro. Nekredeble — des pli, kiam oni konsideras, ke Jurgen restas (laŭ la Auld-a enkonduko) unu el la plej ŝatataj libroj de la tradukinto. Tamen memorindas, ke skotoj tradicie ĝuas pli altan klerecon ol iliaj sudaj najbaroj, la angloj; eble pro tio anglaj kolegoj miaj ne estas aŭdintaj pri Cabell. Aŭ eble ŝanĝiĝis la modo. Kvankam ĉiam plaĉas fantaziaĵoj (aktuale furoras en Britujo libroj — kaj furoros la filmo — pri juna sorĉisto Harry Potter, pri kiu prelegis en Zagrebo Marjorie Boulton), povas esti ke la ja imagoplena Jurgen tro intelektas, ja tro fidele spegulas homan malforton, homan falemon, por komforte kongrui kun nuntempa eskapemo. Kaj kia eskapemo (kiu fakte — potterece — povus filme furori)! Ne ĉiu, kiel la lombardisto Jurgen, sukcesas eskapi edzinon, mezaĝon kaj profesion por eniri i.a. inferon, paradizon kaj ĉielon. Samtempe Jurgen, serĉante sian edzinon, retenas maturecon kaj saĝon, kiu ebligas al li prikomenti kaj prijuĝi sian ĉirkaŭaĵon kaj sian foje malmoralan, tamen honeste homan konduton:

    Nova traduko de William Auld
    En aprilo 2001 Sezonoj (Ruslando) eldonis en Esperanto la romanon Jurgen de J.B.Cabell. Jene prezentas la libron la tradukinto, William Auld Usona aŭtoro James Branch Cabell (1879–1958) publikigis pli ol kvindek romanojn, el kiuj plimultaj estas fantaziecaj. Lia oka libro estis Jurgen (1919), kaj jam dum pli ol duonjarcento ĝi restas unu el miaj plej ŝatataj legaĵoj, kies sorĉo neniam paliĝas. La romano pasas en sentempeca mezepoko de la imagita lando Poictesme. La heroo, Jurgen, estas kvardekjara lombardisto, iama poeto, kiu regajnas sian perditan junecon, retenante tamen la saĝon kaj sperton de sia matura aĝo. Serĉante sian forsorĉitan edzinon, Jurgen travojaĝas konatajn fantaziajn kaj legendajn teritoriojn, inkluzive de la kristanaj infero kaj paradizo, prosperante ĉe belaj virinoj (ekzemple, Helena de Trojo) kaj ĉiam plialtiĝante range, ĝis fine li renkontas la ĉiel-potencan Koŝĉej (kiu “faris ĉiujn aferojn tiaj, kiaj ili estas”) kaj petas, kun interesaj sekvoj, redonon de la edzino. John Francis tre lerte utiligis Jurgenon kaj la stilon de Cabell en sia novelo “Kiel kaj kial Jurgen turniris por Damo Lisa” ( Vitralo , paĝoj 112–132).
