  • SECOND ANNUAL DINNER OF THE NEW YORK UNION
A paragraph in the Graduate Magazine of last May spoke of the coming dinner of the New York Union of the University of Kansas. The meeting was on the sixteenth of June, at a small dining place down town. Our weather took a sea-turn, and a pouring rain came with the night. Nevertheless thirty-one were present. Among the number were Professor and Mrs. Carruth and Miss Constance straight from the University, and Professor Blake after a larger absence.
We met for good-fellowship at half past six, but plates were not served till near nine. Thereupon we rose and sang with hearty spontaneity "The Alumni Song" written by our member

Weird Tales and Astounding Science Fiction . Many authors of this period wrote first for these magazines and their stories were later collected and made more widely known in book form in the 50s to 70s. Also a number of the Golden Age authors have had very long and prolific writing lives, and also began writing collaborative works in the twilight of their careers. The authors in this section were born between 1907 and 1924 inclusive. We may say that they were the generation that experienced the Second World War. In fact the first two on our list, Robert Heinlein and L. Sprague De Camp spent most of the war in the US Naval Air Experimental Station alongside a younger companion by name of Isaac Asimov. INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: A DOCUMENTARY HISTORY
Series Three: The Papers of James Watt and his Family
formerly held at Doldowlod House, now at Birmingham Central Library
20 reels of 35mm silver-halide positive microfilm In Series Three of this microfilm project, Industrial Revolution: A Documentary History There is excellent correspondence with the following: - Aimé Argand (Swiss physician and scientist) writes about Argand lamps made at Soho, water companies in Paris, visits to French country houses and to see Ministers as well as about James Watt junior's foreign tour.
    - Sir Joseph Banks (scientist and President of the Royal Society, 1778-1820). Letters cover many different subjects including lamp glass, gunpowder, the medical use of gases, shrievalty and coinage.
Dr Thomas Beddoes (physician and founder of the Pneumatic Institute at Clifton in Bristol). Dr Beddoes and Erasmus Darwin write about the medical uses of gases (a particularly full series of letters revealing much about the practical implementation of Beddoes' ideas).
    - Claude-Louis Berthollet (French chemist) sends telling eye-witness accounts of French work on the theory of dyeing and bleaching, the problems of establishing the new chemical nomenclature of the 1780s, and the difficulties of life during the French Revolution.
