Myers Literary Guide Centre for Northern Studies JOSEPH BUTLER (1692 - 1752) In 1726, the year in which he published his important Fifteen Sermons , Butler was appointed to the rectory at Stanhope in Weardale, the 'golden rectory' as it was known in the North. Situated in lead-mining country, the living was a rich one, and several of the incumbents went on to occupy the bishopric. Little is known of his secluded life at Stanhope, beyond his great charity and his habit of riding a black pony very fast. When Queen Caroline inquired whether he was dead, Archbishop Blackburne replied: 'He is not dead, Madam, but buried.' Nevertheless, these years at Stanhope were to produce, in 1736, his Analogy of Religion , the greatest theological work of his time, and one of the most original of any period. Butler became Bishop of Durham in 1750. Horace Walpole, a true product of the age of reason, characteristically remarked that he had been wafted to his see in a cloud of metaphysics and remained in it thereafter. AS Revision Notes: Conscience These notes are summary points from the more detailed notes found on the main A Level Religious Studies page. Introduction Conscience is understood to both reflect on and direct behaviour. These two aspects of conscience are known as:
  • Judicial Conscience: Critically assessing and evaluating one’s past actions. Legislative Conscience: Deciding what needs to be done in the future.
Both these aspects of conscience can be found in the Bible. Conscience in the Bible There is no Hebrew (Old Testament) word for conscience. The closest to it is the word for ‘heart’: ‘Oh that today you would hear his voice and not harden your heart.’ (Psalm 95:8) In Greek (New Testament) the word for conscience is ‘suneidesis’ ( literally means ‘to know’). The Apostle Paul uses it to refer to those who ‘know’ the will of God as that which is intended to rule their lives (i.e. believers):
  • This means they can have a sense of guilt before God (Hebrews 10:22). That they have the ability to reason good and bad acts (Romans 9:1).

Why Social Engineers Are Invariably Dangerously Wrong
A Warning From Joseph Butler (1692-1752) The following is from " The Eighteenth Century Background " by Basil Willey (1940), the chapter entitled ' Butler As A Moralist Three Sermons p 99 by Joseph Butler Why is the 'greatest happiness' principle (which for good utilitarians comprised the whole of the law and the prophets) a terrible mistake? Because, in Butler's view, we simply do not possess, in our present imperfect state, sufficient clairvoyance for us to be certain about the consequences of our actions, 'nor do we know what we are about, when we endeavour to promote the good of mankind in any ways but those he [God] has directed'. Shocking actions might be performed with a view to producing an overbalance of happiness. Such ultimate objectives as the happiness of mankind are beyond our limited scope, and we may easily, in attempting to pursue them, become moral monsters. Our safety lies in following the God-given instinct which condemns violence, injustice, and falsehood, and approves benevolence towards some (e.g. kindred, friends, or countrymen) rather than towards others; whereas with the more grandiose aims we may easily be led into perpetrating the former, and neglecting the latter. 'The happiness of the world', he concludes, 'is the concern of him who is the Lord and the proprietor of it'; our concern is only with conduct dictated by the sense of duty. Or as Dr Broad expresses it: God might be conceived to be a utilitarian 'were his moral character merely that of benevolence; yet ours is not so'. 'And though it is of course our duty,' Butler adds
