Joseph Butler, 16921752; Analogy of Religion and Fifteen Sermons. Questionhow do you make sense of Christian faith in light of the world about us?
http://www.vts.edu/Resources/classnotes/CE/Butler.htm
CE Prof. Timothy Sedgwick Reflecting how Richard Hooker and Jeremy Taylor see Christian faith given, Anglicanism may be understood as a worshipping community formed under the story of Christ where worship is the sacramental celebration or enactment of the story. But this is not to answer the range of questions that arise within the community of faith. As a tradition evolves, as a community develops form one generation to the next, obvious questions shift or change and the sheer volume of the responses to the questions of the community increases. New responses generate arguments for and against. New positions develop. The development of tradition is, in this sense, a matter of complexification. But, if the distinct questions of how to deepen, share, mediate, and understand identity mediated in Word and sacrament (what may be called narrative identity) are kept in mind, then some order may be discerned among what are otherwise seen as competing claims about the essence of the tradition and Christianity itself. In fact, if the distinct questions are kept in mind, the broader basis or shape of Christian faith as sacramental, as given in the worshipping community (in Word and sacrament), may be seen instead of lost form view. These questions may vary but include: 1. How do we deepen the faith celebrated in a life lived?

A 6 page paper discussing two views of Bishop Butler’s pronouncements of the worth of self love. Joseph Butler (1692-1752) is a pre-utilitarianism, pre-Freud minister who took note of the concept of self-love as not only being morally acceptable, but as constituting a primary impetus for “good works” and benevolence. One of the authors discussed agrees; the other does not wholly disagree but fails to disprove Butler’s position philosophically. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

When I died, the circulating library Which I built up for Spoon River, And managed for the good of inquiring minds, Was sold at auction on the public square, As if to destroy the last vestige Of my memory and influence. For those of you who could not see the virtue Of knowing Volney's "Ruins" as well as Butler's "Analogy" And "Faust" as well as "Evangeline," Were really the power in the village, And often you asked me, "What is the use of knowing the evil in the world?" I am out of your way now, Spoon River, Choose your own good and call it good. For I could never make you see That no one knows what is good Who knows not what is evil; And no one knows what is true Who knows not what is false. HIGHLIGHTS OF ETHICS (MORAL PHILOSOPHY)
Compiled by Alan Anderson, March 1999, largely based on, and often quoting, Robert L. Holmes, Basic Moral Philosophy ; Milton D. Hunnex, Philosophies and Philosophers Rev. Ed.; Peter A. Angeles, Dictionary of Philosophy , 2nd ed.; "Ethics" in The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy ; and William L. Reese, Dictionary of Philosophy and Religion , 2nd ed., and material put onto the Web by Robert Cavalier of Carnegie Mellon University
Most simply put, traditional ethics attempts to say what we should value and how we should act.
The following two paragraphs are the "Introduction" from the IEP article referred to above:
The field of ethics, also called moral philosophy, involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior. Philosophers today usually divide ethical theories into three general subject areas: metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics. Metaethics investigates where our ethical principles come from, and what they mean. Are they merely social inventions? Do they involve more than expressions of our individual emotions? Metaethical answers to these questions focus on the issues of universal truths, the will of God, the role of reason in ethical judgments, and the meaning of ethical terms themselves. Normative ethics involves a more practical task, which is to arrive at moral standards that regulate right and wrong conduct. Should I borrow my roommate's car without first asking him? Should I steal food to support my starving family? Ideally, these moral questions could be immediately answered by consulting the moral guidelines provided by normative theories. Finally

    Chapter 8 Animals Have Souls
One widespread rationalization in Christian circles, often used to justify humanity’s mistreatment of animals, is the erroneous belief that humans alone possess immortal souls, and only humans, therefore, are worthy of moral consideration. The 19 th century German philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer, condemned such a philosophy in his On the Basis of Morality "Because Christian morality leaves animals out of account," wrote Schopenhauer, "they are at once outlawed in philosophical morals; they are mere ‘things,’ mere means to any ends whatsoever. They can therefore be used for vivisection, hunting, coursing, bullfights, and horse racing, and can be whipped to death as they struggle along with heavy carts of stone. Shame on such a morality that is worthy of pariahs, and that fails to recognize the eternal essence that exists in every living thing, and shines forth with inscrutable significance from all eyes that see the sun!" According to the Bible, animals have souls. Texts such as Genesis 1:21,24 are often mistranslated to read "living creatures." The exact Hebrew used in reference to animals throughout the Bible is "

    Where Do We Start?
A Conversation About Apologetics With W. Robert Godfrey, R.C. Sproul, and Rod Rosenbladt
    MR:
Our objective in this conversation is to consider apologetics, which is essentially a defense of the faith as a courtroom attorney would present it. Scripture exhorts us to be ready to give an answer for the hope that we have to those who ask. Traditionally there have been three basic positions within mainstream evangelicalismespecially in this centurywith respect to how we should reach out to non-Christians. Those three positions are represented in this conversation by Dr. Robert Godfrey, President of Westminster Seminary in California, Dr. Rod Rosenbladt, Professor at Concordia University in Irvine, California, and Dr. R. C. Sproul, Chairman of Ligonier Ministries. Dr. Godfrey, as our token presuppositionalist, would you open our discussion by outlining presuppositionalism for us? WRG: The basic position of presuppositionalism is that no one comes to any question neutrally, that presuppositions stemming from a variety of religious points of view have to be taken very seriously in any kind of communication, and that we do not approach any question related to the Scripture and the Gospel as if it were in doubt. Instead, it is the certain revelation of our God and on the basis of that certain revelation we carry out our defense of the faith. MR: Dr. Sproul, classical apologetics is the position which you have defended, especially in the book you wrote with Art Lindsley and John Gerstner, Classical Apologetics. Would you explain that position?
