S³u¿y³ na dworze przysz³ego (od 1327) króla Anglii - Edwarda III, prawdopodobnie by³ jego nauczycielem. 1330 dopomóg³ Edwardowi w pozbyciu siê kurateli ze strony matki, Izabeli, i jej faworyta, Rogera Mortimera. Od 1333 biskup Durham, od 1334 kanclerz. 1330-1343 dzia³a³ aktywnie jako dyplomata, g³ównie na dworze papieskim w Awinionie oraz we Francji. Kilkakrotnie prowadzi³ tak¿e rokowania ze Szkotami. Znany bibliofil, tak¿e autor kilku dzie³, m.in. "Liber Epistolaris", byæ mo¿e równie¿ traktatu "Philobiblon" (1343, wydanie 1473, przek³ad polski J. Kasprowicza "O mi³oœci do ksi¹g", 1921).

Philobiblon, or, the Love of Books: completed by de Bury on January 24, 1345, Philobiblon was first published at Cologne in 1473. (Philobiblon)
Ecclesiastes . . . , in his 12th Chapter: "And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh" (Eccles. 12.12).
When we compare the multiplication of volumes in our own day with the slow productions of the transcribers described by Richard de Bury, we may say "there is no end of making many books." The copiers of manuscripts, indeed, were many, and their labours were incessant; but the whole life of the most industrious individual employed in this task would add only a few to the number of volumes in the world. With what ardour must the recluse have been inspired who resolved to set about the transcription of a bible or breviary, or

Irriage of Anne of Lorraine with the duke of Nemours in to 18 the duchy of Aumale passed to the house of Savoy-Nemours. to 1686 Marie Jeanne Baptiste, duchess of Nemours and of thi imale, and wife of Charles Emmanuel II., duke of Savoy, Pc Ed Aumale to Louis XIV., who gave it to his natural son, the E1 ,ke of Maine. After the death of that prince, the dukedom frc volved upon his brother, the count of Toulouse, subsequently He ssing to the latters son, the duke of Penthivre, whose daughter wi irried the duke of Orleans. Since the reign of Louis Philippe, an rig of the French, the title of duke of Aumale has been borne en a son of the duke of Orleans. ch AUMONT, the name of a family which played an important fir rt in French history. The origin of the name is uncertain, t it has usually been derived from Aumont, now a small W ~UNCEL (from the Anglo-Fr. auncelie, a confused derivation m launcelle, Ital. lancella, a little balance), a balance formerly ~d in England; now, in dialectical use, a term for the weighing meat by hand instead of by scales. ~UNDH, a native state of India, in the Deccan division of mbay, ranking as one of the Satara Jagirs. Its area is 447 m.; its population was 63,921 in 1901, showing a decrease 2% in the decade. Estimated revenue 9422. The chief, ose title is Pant Pratinidhi, is a Brahman by caste. The te has suffered severely from plague. The town of Aundh situated 26 m. S.E. of Satara. Pop. about 3500.

Beginn: 17.04.2003 Schwendenerstr. 1 Die Vorlesung/Übung bietet einen Einblick in das breite Spektrum zum Thema Sterben und Tod im Mittelalter, vom Sterben im Kreise der Familie oder Mönchsgemeinschaft oder sogar absichtlich in voller Öffentlichkeit als tugendhaftes Vorbild und als Durchgang ins Jenseits. Zur Sprache kommt auch, dass die Pestwellen des 14. Jahrhunderts den Schrecken des Sterbens in einer die nächsten Generationen prägenden Intensität bewußt gemacht hatten, so daß eine Sterbekunst (Ars moriendi) entwickelt werden mußte. Zur Sprache kommt gleichfalls das Umgehen mit diesem zutiefst existentiellen Problem in unserer Gesellschaft.
