(Philobiblon) Philobiblon, or, the Love of Books: completed by de Bury on January 24, 1345, Philobiblon was first published at Cologne in 1473. (Philobiblon) Ecclesiastes . . . , in his 12th Chapter: "And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh" (Eccles. 12.12). When we compare the multiplication of volumes in our own day with the slow productions of the transcribers described by Richard de Bury, we may say "there is no end of making many books." The copiers of manuscripts, indeed, were many, and their labours were incessant; but the whole life of the most industrious individual employed in this task would add only a few to the number of volumes in the world.
