SIR RICHARD FRANCIS BURTON
BURTON, SIR RICHARD FRANCIS Besides Lady Burtons Life of Sir Richard F. Burton (2 vols., 1893, 2nd edition, condensed, edited, with a preface. by W. H. Wilkins, 1898), there are A Sketch of the Career of R. F. Burton, by A. B. Richards, Andrew Wilson, and St Clair Baddeley (1886); The True Life of Captain Sir Richard F. Burton, by his niece, G. M. Stisted (1896); and a brief sketch by the present writer prefixed to Bohns edition of the Pilgrimage to Al-Medinah and Meccah (1898), from which some sentences have here been by permission reproduced. In 1906 appeared the Life of Sir Richard Burton, by Thomas Wright of Olney, in two volumes, an industrious and rather critical work, interesting in particular for the doubts it casts on Burtons originality as an Arabic translator, and emphasizing his indebtedness to Paynes translation (i881) of the Arabian Nights. The Jew, the Gypsy and El Islam by Sir Richard F. Burton INFO re. THE FULL ORIGINAL MS. OF THE JEW IS FOUND AT THE BOTTOM HALF OF THIS PAGE Color scan of actual title page. Click on image for larger version. This is one of the two American editions. Published in 1898 as 3 books in one. Never reprinted by a large, mainstream publishing house; occasionally reprinted by small, independent publishers. However Jew-wise Burton may have been, he had a strange bias favoring Islamic practitioners and Gypsies. As per the Preface below, this could have been due to Gypsy blood, but this idea was never proved. Book I, The Jew , tho' heavily expurgated, retains much important information about its subject, as do the other two books. All known original editions were:
Repaginated to put exactly two original pages onto each new page, except where impossible due to space constraints. In full text with frontispiece illustration. The 1898 editor was William Henry Wilkins (1860-1905). He also co-authored The Romance of Isabel Lady Burton , 1897 and edited Wanderings in Three Continents Minor erratum: In The Jew , ch. ii, p. 33, Wilkins has "732" as the year of the death of Muhammad, but the commonly accepted date today is 632.

Sir Richard Francis Burton's Writings
Description of the Art Work
"First Footsteps in East Africa", 1856: One of the greatest British scholar - explorer of the 19th century. He was the first European to explore the forbidden Muslim city of Harer in Somali land, without being executed. He described his adventures in this book. Other writings include Journals, Notes, Papers, Translations.
Description of incident
1856 England : "First Footsteps in East Africa", the publisher tore out an appendix, written in Latin, which dealt with sexual customs of certain tribes. Partly from his experience, Burton learned the techniques of publishing to avoid Victorian censorship. 1883-1890 : Burton was the principal translator of several works which, in order to sidestep obscenity laws, he issued "privately" and, ostensibly, abroad. Among these were : "The Kama Sutra of Vatsayana", 1883 (the classic Hindu sex manual); "The Book of the Thousands Nights and a Night", 1883-1888; "The Perfumed Garden"; "A Manual of Arabian Erotology" , 1886: and other works, all of which bore imprints such as : "Printed for the Karma Shastra Society for Private Subscribers Only, Benares."
Results of incident
1890 Upon the death of the explorer, anthropologist, writer and translator, his widow, Lady Isabel Burton, destroyed all his remaining private diaries and most of his everyday journals, many private letters and papers, and the notes for a revised edition of "The Perfumed Garden", which he referred to as "The Second Garden." Many of the writing and reading public condemned her.

To Your Scattered Bodies Go
Author Info: Philip Jose Farmer
The central conceit of Farmer's Hugo Award Winner is that everyone who ever lived on Earth is resurrected along the banks of a river on a mysterious world. One of the first people to understand their predicament and take action is the linguist, explorer, translator Sir Richard Francis Burton. Along with Alice Hargreaves (of Alice in Wonderland fame), a Neanderthal named Kazz , an alien from Tau Centauri named Monat Grrautut (who precipitated the Apocalypse that destroyed Earth in 2008) and others found along the way, Burton sets off upriver to try to figure out why they've been brought to this place. But when they figure out that The River may be 20 million miles long and then they are captured by Herman Goring and a band of Ancient Romans, things get even more complicated.

Burton, Sir Richard F. (1821-1890)
page: When Burton sought to assimilate an indigenous culture he threw himself into the local milieu , seeking the common man's life rather than upper class ways. This propensity of immersing himself among the lower classes gave rise to Burton's being referred to by his fellow Britons as the "White Nigger." After a long engagement, Burton married Isabel Arundel in 1861. Marrying a Roman Catholic afforded Burton yet another opportunity to affront English sensibilities, as did his publication of exotic sexual manuals and how-to books. Burton's marriage seems to have been happy, and his wife seems to have supported his scholarly works, including the famous translations. Sponsor Message.
Throughout his career, Burton collected literature in its original language and translated it into English. It is through his efforts that The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana Ananga Ranga or the Hindu Art of Love (1885)
