About this site Discussion Board Sites General Sites Life and Travel Writing The Thousand and One Nights Other Translations ... Miscellaneous Welcome to Sir Richard F. Burton on the Web, a comprehensive web directory and guide to all things Burton. Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) frustrates simple description. Adventurer, linguist, scholar, swordsman, rogue, deviant, genius he possessed wild, monstrous talents and was burdened by defects nearly as grave. Continually at odds with the sentiments of his times (he published the first translation of the Kama Sutra and his Arabian Nights was famous for its naughty bits) he was at the same time an unmistakable Victorian. On this site you will find over 130 links, including biographies, selections from his works, academic articles, images and so forth. It is intended to offer some alternative to the nearly random results obtained by search engines (a certain homonymous Welsh actor is tough to shake). Almost everything is off-site. As my own modest contribution, I offer scans of the illustrations from his Arabian Nights and a selection from his Priapeia Questions, site suggestions and comments can be sent to

Sir Richard Francis Burton
(1821-1890 e.v.)
by T. Apiryon
English explorer, orientalist, scholar, linguist, sexologist, mystic and spy. He was raised in France and Italy and studied at Oxford. He served as a Captain in the Bombay Native Infantry in what is now Pakistan from 1843 to 1848. He travelled the world in service to the British government, and served as British Consul on the island of Fernando Poo off the coast of Equatorial Guinea; in Santos, Brazil; in Damascus; and in Trieste, where he died. Burton wrote the poem The Kasîdah of Hâjî Abdû El-Yezdî and translated The Arabian Nights (Alf Laylah wa Laylah, the Thousand Nights and a Night) with copious annotations; both of these works are included in Section 2 of the A:. A:. reading list. He also translated the erotic manuals The Kama Sutra, The Ananda Ranga, and The Scented Garden of Sheikh Nefzawi, which are given as recommended reading in Liber Artemis Iota. Burton also wrote A Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Mecca and Al-Madina, which is the account of his participation in the Hajj in 1853, impersonating an Indian Pathan. His success in this dangerous feat was due to his intimate familiarity with the languages and customs of the region, and also perhaps to the fact that he was an initiate of the Kadiri Order of Dervishes. He was one of the first Europeans to explore East Africa, and was one of the discoverers of Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria Nyanza. His other expeditions included one across the United States to Salt Lake City, and a voyage up the Congo River.

The 19th century's renaissance man, Burton was - in addition to being an explorer or note - the greatest linguist of his age. Of course the two endeavors do complement each other (exploration and linguistics), but no other explorer has studied language as a central aspect of exploration the way Burton did.

Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton
by Adam Jones
This British explorer and "renaissance man" represents to me the best the 19 th century had to offer. Burton possessed an extraordinary range of personal attributes. Among other things, he was probably the most formidable linguist of the era. Combined with his omnivorous interest in foreign cultures, his way with languages enabled him to travel incognito to the holy cities of Mecca, Medina and Harar (in modern-day Somalia). He also served British colonial interests in the East India Company army, as a regular officer in Crimea, and as a spy in "The Great Game" in Central Asia. It was while on active duty in modern-day India and Pakistan that he wrote his first books, Goa and the Blue Mountains Scinde, or: the Unhappy Valley (two volumes), and Sindh, and the Races that Inhabit the Valley of the Indus (two volumes), all published in 1851! Together with Richard Speke, Burton "discovered" Lake Tanganyika on his great expeditions of 1856-58, and narrowly missed finding Nyanza (Lake Victoria), the source of the Nile. Speke did find it, alone, but failed to circumnavigate the lake. A public controversy arose when Speke returned to England to claim the Nile "prize." On the day he was to debate Burton on the subject at the Royal Geographical Society, in the summer of 1859, Speke died of a gunshot wound, apparently self-inflicted. (This part of Burton's life is covered excitingly in the film Mountains of the Moon (1990), with Patrick Bergin surprisingly convincing as Burton. The movie plays fast and loose with biographical and historical details, but is well worth seeing for its cinematic and scenic pleasures. It is the only film made about Burton's life, though Richard Attenborough, director of
