John Burroughs was sixty-two years old and a self-proclaimed "home body" when Edward Harriman asked him to join the Alaska Expedition in 1899. Burroughs was not a traveler, nor was he a scientist. As a young man he'd tried his hand at many things: at botany, medicine, school teaching and office work at the Treasury in Washington, D.C. It was in Washington that he'd come under the influence of Walt Whitman. The poet urged Burroughs to leave his office job and write full time. Burroughs moved to the Catskill Mountains in New York State, and maintained a successful writing career for decades. He had published hundreds of articles on birds, flowers, and natural wonders of all sorts - his 27 books had sold over two million copies. He was the most famous nature writer of the day. His fame made him a natural choice for the Harriman trip. As he himself said, he "was not a man of science," but could "graze eagerly in every one of its fields - astronomy, geology, botany, zoology, physics, chemistry, natural history."

Mr. Renehan is working on a one-hour documentary about Burroughs (1837-1921) for public television. It is being produced by Lynn Spangler, whose previous credits include a much-praised documentary about the black abolitionist Sojourner Truth. The documentary is expected to be completed in early 2005.
Dear JB: Some friends and I are making a documentary film about your long life. We've just finished a shoot at your beautifully-preserved but rarely-visited cabin, Slabsides, near the western shore of the Hudson River some 90 miles above Manhattan. As well, we will soon be at work with our cameras at your Catskills retreat, Woodchuck Lodge, on the family farm where you were born. We're hoping the project will do something to resurrect your image.

    I was from USA, and I lived from 1837-1921. Print or Buy my poetry? View comments Add to favorites? John Burroughs was born on April 3, 1837 on his family's farm in Roxbury. He spent his youth working on the farm and exploring Old Clump Mountain. His favorite place he called Boyhood Rock, where he would sit and study the ways of Nature around him.
    He was a teacher, a journalist, a treasury clerk in Washington, DC (where he met and befriended Walt Whitman), and a bank examiner before returning to his beloved Catskills. In 1871, his first book Wake Robin was published. In 1874 he bought a small farm in Esopus, and devoted himself completely to his writing. Later, he would divide his time between "Slabsides", his summer retreat at West Park, near Esopus, and "Woodchuck Lodge" in Roxbury.
    His essays ranged from studies of birds and nature to religion and literature. Burroughs was a staunch defender of Whitman and Thoreau, then unpopular beacause of their perceived literary excesses. But the writing he is best known for are his gentle observations of nature. Alf Evers in The Catskill: From Wilderness to Woodstock noted that the first verse of the poem Waiting expresses this "serene acceptance of life" by Burroughs:

WHY DOESN'T BILL FORD TRY FOR A LITTLE HISTORICAL TRUTH IN ADVERTISING?

By Edward J. Renehan Jr. Old Evans Mill near Leadmine, West Virginia
My daughter Katherine is the only 11-year-old in the country who recognizes on-sight the ancient American naturalist John Burroughs (1837-1921). And she has lately been making a great many sightings. "Daddy, there he is again!" she shouts. Upon this cue I look up from my newspaper, turn to the television, and confront Burroughs's white-bearded grin as he sits at a picnic table with Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and Thomas Edison. The newsreel footage, which dates from 1917, has been cleaned up using digital technology. It looks quite crisp.
I wrote John Burroughs's biography in 1992. This explains Katherine's abnormally high awareness of the long-forgotten JB. Although quite obscure today, Burroughs achieved great celebrity in his own time. He wrote more than 25 books. He boasted close personal friendships with such giants as Walt Whitman, Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir. He received honorary doctorates from Yale and other major universities. He participated in the Harriman Expedition to Alaska. After he died, dozens of towns around the country named schools in his memory. The American Museum of Natural History even put some of his personal effects on permanent display.
Now he's been resurrected ... somewhat. The occasion is a new, history-oriented ad campaign from the Ford Motor Company: a series of television spots narrated by current company-head Bill Ford. In one of the spots titled "Discover," Ford discourses on the bit of corporate history that involves Burroughs: "My two great-grandfathers, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone, used to take these camping trips every year with Thomas Edison and whoever the president at the time was. They called themselves 'the Vagabonds.' They sort of invented SUVs." Ford goes on to say that he loves the outdoors himself and uses an SUV to get there. "SUVs are what people want, and we do them better than anybody else."

HUNTING ALL THE WAY HOME
By Sydney Lea
Lea is a lover of the outdoors and "blood sports", and of the companions, both human and canine, who share his forays in the wild - a love he conveys with wonderful effect in this collection of essays and poems through language that though poetic is never precious. Running through all is an elegiac tone born of a sense of wild places and beloved friends and family passing, a tone augmented by the New England autumns that are the setting for many of the entries. A SAND COUNTY ALMANAC
By Aldo Leopold
First published in 1949, this collection is part nature essay, part memoir, and part sermon. A convert from a more heedless view of the natural world, Leopold is a sensitive observer of nature and an articulate proponent of what he calls an ethical duty of the human race to protect nature's balance. In the title section, he writes of his experiences at his family's rural retreat on the Wisconsin River. Other sections explore the state of nature in other regions and man's impact upon them. July 10, 2003 marked the 100th anniversary of the "Red Letter" day when President Theodore Roosevelt and his wife Edith visited the famed literary naturalist John Burroughs (1837-1921) at the Hudson River hamlet of West Park, township of Esopus, Ulster County, NY. In the course of several hours, TR and Edith stopped at Burroughs's two homes in that tiny village: his rustic cabin retreat "Slabsides" and his main-house at the farm Burroughs called "Riverby," overlooking the Hudson. The following description of the Roosevelts' visit comes from the book JOHN BURROUGHS: AN AMERICAN NATURALIST, written by Edward J. Renehan Jr. and published by Black Dome Press. Note: Julian Burroughs (1878-1954), referenced below, was the son of John Burroughs. The Reverend William J. Long - also mentioned below - was the writer whom both TR and Burroughs had recently attacked as a "nature-faker." Burroughs and TR had been friends since the 1880s. Burroughs had accompanied the President on a highly-publicized camping trip to Yellowstone in 1903 - a journey Burroughs eventually recorded in the book CAMPING AND TRAMPING WITH ROOSEVELT (Houghton Mifflin, 1907).

Edward J. Renehan, Jr.
The first full biography of the dean of American nature writers to be published since 1925.
"[Renehan reveals] a far more complex and interesting man than other biographers have described. ... In this thoughtful biography we are shown the once sainted 'Sage of Slabsides' as a flesh-and-blood traveler in a now-vanished world." The Sunday New York Times Book Review
John Burroughs (1837-1921) emerged from an obscure boyhood in the Catskill Mountains to write more than thirty books, create the genre of the nature essay, and become the preeminent nature writer of his day. In this critically-acclaimed biography, Edward J. Renehan, Jr. draws on a wealth of previously unpublished manuscripts, journals and letters to portray the man Henry James called "a more humorous, more available and more sociable Thoreau." In the process, Renehan reveals Burroughs's complex and enduring relationships with such notables as Jay Gould, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thomas Edison, John Muir, Walt Whitman, Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Ford.
"Renehan's biography does precisely what it sets out to do: it provides the thorough, responsible, readable biography which has so long been wanting in Burroughs scholarship."

WAITING by: John Burroughs (1837-1921)
    ERENE, I fold my hands and wait,
    Nor care for wind, nor tide, nor sea;
    I rave no more 'gainst time or fate,
    For, lo! my own shall come to me.
    I stay my haste, I make delays,
    For what avails this eager pace?
    I stand amid the eternal ways,
    And what is mine shall know my face.
    Asleep, awake, by night or day,
    The friends I seek are seeking me;
    No wind can drive my bark astray,
    Nor change the tide of destiny.
    What matter if I stand alone?
    I wait with joy the coming years;
    My heart shall reap where it hath sown,
    And garner up its fruit of tears.
    The waters know their own and draw
    The brook that springs in yonder height;
    So flows the good with equal law
    Unto the soul of pure delight.
    The stars come nightly to the sky;
    The tidal wave unto the sea;
    Nor time, nor space, nor deep, nor high,
    Can keep my own away from me.
"Waiting" is reprinted from The Little Book of American Poets: 1787-1900 . Ed. Jessie B. Rittenhouse. Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1915. MORE POEMS BY JOHN BURROUGHS RELATED LINKS

John Burroughs
American essayist and naturalist, 1837-1921
Travel and society polish one, but a rolling stone gathers no moss, and a little moss is a good thing on a man. To treat your facts with imagination is one thing, to imagine your facts is another. The spirit of man can endure only so much and when it is broken only a miracle can mend it. The secret of happiness is something to do. The lure of the distant and the difficult is deceptive. The great opportunity is where you are. Temperament lies behind mood; behind will, lies the fate of character. Then behind both, the influence of family the tyranny of culture; and finally the power of climate and environment; and we are free, only to the extent we rise above these. Nature teaches more than she preaches. There are no sermons in stones. It is easier to get a spark out of a stone than a moral. If I were to name the three most precious resources of life, I should say books, friends, and nature; and the greatest of these, at least the most constant and always at hand, is nature.
