Author: Peg Aloi Posted: Jan. 21, 2001 This Page Viewed: Burns Night, in Honor of "Rabbie" Burns, 1759-1796 By Peg Aloi On January 25th, the anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, those of Scottish descent often celebrate Burns Night, an evening of celebration which features traditional Scottish foods, and the singing of songs and reciting of poems written by the man many consider to be one of the best-loved poets of the English language. My younger brother was also born on January 25th (coincidentally he is also named Robert) and he shares this Aquarian birthday with a man who lived a life of traveling and writing songs and verse expressive of his love for the natural world. Aquarius is a sign known to be unique; the sign of one who marches to a different drummer. Burns' unusual lifestyle, his long walks in the countryside which inspired his romantic writing, was surely the model of the perfect Aquarian. Burns, a prolific poet, worked at a vocation many today might envy: he was an inspector of whisky distilleries. Sadly, this job may have helped hasten his death at the untimely age of 37. Riding many miles on horseback in harsh Scottish weather, Burns contracted pneumonia and was advised to take what was then a popular treatment: "the ocean cure." It was believed swimming in the ocean would heal those sick with lung complaints. But sadly, Burns' condition worsened and he died, leaving behind a legacy of wonderful songs and poems which surely would have been richer and fuller had he lived longer.

    Administrative / Biographical History
Robert Burns was born in Alloway, Aryshire on 25 January 1759. From 1765 to 1768 Burns was educated at an 'adventure' school by his father, neighbours and a teacher, John Murdoch. In 1775 he attended a mathematics school in Kirkswald. Burns spent his youth working on his father's tenant farm and by the age of 15 he was the principle worker on the farm. At this early age Burns began to write poetry about aspects of Scottish life. On the death of his father in 1784, Robert and his brother became partners in the farm. Robert abandoned farming in 1785 to concentrate on writing poetry. He published his first collection of poems, Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect - Kilmarnock Edition , in 1786. Burns moved to Edinburgh where he won critical acclaim for his poetry amongst the Edinburgh literati. In 1787 he was sponsored by the Caledonian Hunt to publish a new edition of his poems. He left Edinburgh in 1788 for Ellisfarm near Dumfries to begin farming once again. However he continued to write poetry. In 1789 Burns began working for the Excise in Dumfries and in 1791 he left the farm to live and work in the town. Burns died in Dumfries from heart disease on 21 July 1796.

    Robert Burns (1759-1796)
On January 25th many Rotary Clubs around the world hold a Burns Supper and enjoy eating the traditional Scottish meal of haggis, neeps and tatties, the drinking of whisky, and the recitation of works by, about, and in the spirit of Scotland's National Bard - Robert Burns.
At that particular time, I wonder how many have realised a special Rotary connection with Burns? It is more than simply the traditional singing of the Burns song ' Auld Lang Syne ' at the end of Conferences and Conventions; it is more profound.
Robert Burns was Rotary founder, Paul Harris' favourite poet. Forget for a moment the annual RI Presidential themes, Harris believed that Burns' work - ' A Man's a Man For A' That ' (quoted below) -gave to us all a simple yet definitive Rotary philosophy based around our common humanity.
In his 1935 book 'This Rotarian Age' , he once said (in his unmistakeable prose style) of Burns' poem, " In the compass of these words have been found all the philosophy, all the hope, the substance of every prayer of the first seer, but how vain were the aspirations and hopes of this widely separated twain. Primordial forces were to be reckoned with, as is also the case even now though generations have lived and died since the lips of the sage of Ayr were sealed in death."
Harris would also go on to say, "When I think of Burns I see the thing we are striving for in Rotary - The Brotherhood of Man". He further explained Burns' part in the genesis of Rotary:

    From Local Hero To Legend
L ittle did tutor John Murdoch know that the young pupil who "made rapid progress in reading and was just tolerable at writing" would grow up to become Scotland's national Bard.
Born in Alloway, Ayrshire, in 1759 to William Burness, a poor tenant farmer, and Agnes Broun, Robert Burns was the eldest of seven. He spent his youth working his father's farm, but in spite of his poverty he was extremely well read - at the insistence of his father, who employed a tutor for Robert and younger brother Gilbert. At 15 Robert was the principal worker on the farm and this prompted him to start writing in an attempt to find "some kind of counterpoise for his circumstances." It was at this tender age that Burns penned his first verse, "My Handsome Nell", which was an ode to the other subjects that dominated his life, namely scotch and women.
When his father died in 1784, Robert and his brother became partners in the farm. However, Robert was more interested in the romantic nature of poetry than the arduous graft of ploughing and, having had some misadventures with the ladies (resulting in several illegitimate children, including twins to the woman who would become his wife, Jean Armour), he planned to escape to the safer, sunnier climes of the West Indies.

    Robert Burns (1759 - 1796)
Robert Burns was born at Alloway, near Ayr, on January 25, 1759. His father William was a gardener to the Provost of Ayr. Robert was educated briefly at John Murdoch's school in Alloway and later in Ayr. Family financial worries forced Burns to work as a farm labourer, and it was while thus occupied that he met his first love, Nelly Kirkpatrick. She inspired him to try his hand at poetry, a song entitled " O, once I lov'd a bonnie lass ", set to the tune of a traditional reel. Burns worked at a succession of labouring jobs, including flax dressing, and began writing poetry regularly. When his father died in 1784, Burns and his brother Gilbert rented a farm near Mauchline. Burns spread his affections freely, and the next decade saw 8 illegitimate children born to him through 5 different women. One of these, Jean Armour, became Mrs. Burns in 1788. The first published work of poetry by Robert Burns was " Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect

history and heritage accommodation guide to England, Scotland and Wales Welcome to History UK - the History of Scotland! Robert "Rabbie" Burns 1759 - 1796 Robert Burns is the best loved Scottish poet, admired not only for his verse and great love-songs, but also for his character, his high spirits, 'kirk-defying', hard drinking and womanising! He came to fame as a poet when he was 27 years old, and his lifestyle of wine, women and song made him famous all over Scotland. He was the son of a farmer, born in a cottage built by his father, in Alloway in Ayr. This cottage is now a museum, dedicated to Burns. As a boy, he always loved stories of the supernatural, told to him by an old widow who sometimes helped out on his fathers' farm and when Burns reached adulthood, he turned many of these stories into poems. After the death of his father in 1784, Burns inherited the farm but by 1786 he was in terrible financial difficulties: the farm was not successful and he had made two women pregnant. Burns decided to emigrate to Jamaica so to raise the money required for this journey, he published his 'Poems in the Scottish Dialect' in 1786, which was an immediate success. He was persuaded not to leave Scotland by Dr Thomas Blacklock and in 1787 an Edinburgh edition of the poems was published.
