Portrait of Robert Burns
by Archibald Skirving Foreword The University of South Carolina is marking the bicentenary of Robert Burns's death in 1796, not only with an international research conference on "Robert Burns and Literary Nationalism," but with a major exhibition of works by and about the poet, showing selected highlights from the G. Ross Roy Collection of Burns, Burnsiana and Scottish Poetry. This extensive collection, acquired from Professor Roy through a generous gift-purchase agreement in 1989, is now widely recognized as among the best Burns collections anywhere in North America, and it regularly attracts to the University researchers from around the world. It is a special pleasure to me to see the Roy Collection displayed for the bicentenary, as its acquisition was one of the first goals to be realized after I became director of the University of South Carolina Libraries. The present exhibition, curated by Prof. Roy himself, represents of course only a very small part of the whole collection, which covers Scottish poetry from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, with some earlier items. On-line entries for items in the collection are available through the University's

Robert Burns was born on 25th January, 1759, at Alloway in Ayrshire, and died on 21st July, 1796, at Dumfries. In a very real sense Burns was as great a musician as he was a poet. He dedicated himself to rescuing from oblivion and neglect hundreds of songs without words or with fragmentary or unsuitable words. He knew that a song without words dies. To this day, throughout the world, Scots celebrate the life of Burns. Burns Suppers have been part of Scottish culture for about 200 years as a means of commemorating our best loved bard. And when Burns immortalised haggis in verse he created a central link that is maintained to this day. The ritual was started by close friends of Burns a few years after his death in 1796 as a tribute to his memory. The basic format for the evening has remained unchanged since that time and begins when the chairman invites the company to receive the haggis which is normally carried in by the chef led by a piper playing 'A Man's a Man For A' That'. This is followed by a traditional meal of Haggis, Neaps (Turnips or Swede) and Tatties (Mashed Potatoes) and a night of poems, song and music. Following is a list of some of his songs. By clicking on the song title the Music Store will display all the CDs, videos, tapes, books which contain the song.

    Robert Burns 1759-1796
Born in Alloway, just south of Ayr, Burns was the son of a tenant farmer. An accomplished poet, songwriter, and collector of traditional Scots songs, his work became popular with the literary elite in Edinburgh in spite of its often-satirical attacks on the establishment. After a failed return to his farming roots, he later became an exciseman in Dumfries where he died at the tragically young age of 37. Although Scotland's national bard, Burns' poetry conveys so much of what lies at the root of the human condition that inevitably, his reputation has become truly international and 'Burns Nights' are celebrated in all corners of the globe each January.

    Robert Burns (1759-1796)
Lectures recommandées : Tam o'Shanter (poème), Ae Fond Kiss (poème), Is there for Honest Poverty (poème).

Robert " Auld Lang Syne " Burns
Robert was born on 25 January 1759, in Alloway , Scotland, the eldest of seven children. His father, William Burnes , was a gardener/farmer who seemed to have awfully bad business sense. The family lived in poverty until 1766, when William rented a farm. The family then lived in even worse poverty . Robert got very little education, since he so often had to help with the heavy work of farming, but he read a great deal, and that made up for a lot. He wrote his first poem, "O Once I Loved," in 1774, and after that there was no stopping him. Things got financially better for the family in 1777, after they moved to a different farm, and Robert was able to read and write even more. In 1781, Robert went to the nearby town of Irvine and started a business , which was a colossal failure.
