born Jan. 12?, [Jan. 1, Old Style], 1729, Dublin, Ireland
ied July 9, 1797, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, England British statesman, parliamentary orator, and political thinker prominent in public life from 1765 to about 1795 and important in the history of political theory. He championed conservatism in opposition to Jacobinism in Reflections on the Revolution in France Early life. Burke, the son of a solicitor, entered Trinity College, Dublin, in 1744 and moved to London in 1750 to begin his studies at the Middle Temple. There follows an obscure period in which Burke lost interest in his legal studies, was estranged from his father, and spent some time wandering about England and France. In 1756 he published anonymously A Vindication of Natural Society A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful , which appeared in 1757, gave him some reputation in England and was noticed abroad, among others by Denis Diderot, Immanuel Kant, and G.E. Lessing. In agreement with the publisher Robert Dodsley, Burke initiated The Annual Register as a yearly survey of world affairs; the first volume appeared in 1758 under his (unacknowledged) editorship, and he retained this connection for about 30 years.

25 reels of 35mm silver-halide positive microfilm plus guide "Edmund Burke's own surviving writings are mostly available, and the rest soon will be, in scholarly editions. But the editors of the Correspondence and of the Writings and Speeches are necessarily quite sparing in drawing on the letters and other papers received by Edmund Burke and these are in themselves an important segment of the source material for the political history of the late eighteenth century in which Edmund Burke played a crucial part for over 30 years. This microfilm edition of the papers of Edmund Burke will therefore be welcome to libraries and scholars everywhere."
Conor Cruise O'Brien
Author of The Great Melody: A thematic biography of Edmund Burke
(Sinclair Stevenson, 1992) "Despite his humble origins and failure ever to hold high office, Edmund Burke was of major importance in later eighteenth century politics as a party tactician, member of parliament and orator, political philosopher and writer whose views were influential on many major issues. His well organised papers (never likely to be fully published in a printed version) throw vital light on a large number of key topics of the period, as a description of the collection makes clear."

EDMUND BURKE .............. BIOGRAPHY .............. Burke, Edmund (1729-1797) British Statesman and Political Thinker: Edmund Burke was a leading British philosopher and statesman who eventually supported the patriots in their bid for independence. Burke initially advocated parliamentary supremacy over the colonies, but only on terms acceptable to the colonies. Two of his speeches to Parliament later became famous: one on American taxation (1774) and one on conciliation (1775). He suggested a relationship between Britain and her American colonies in which parliamentary sovereignty would be asserted only with the consent of the colonies, and only for purposes which the colonies recognized as being of common interest. After the American victory at Saratoga, however, Burke asserted that the American colonies could not be retained.
Burke also wrote books of political and aesthetic philosophy, and was known as an eloquent orator.

The first and simplest emotion which we discover in the human mind, is curiosity. Some degree of novelty must be one of the materials in almost every instrument which works upon the mind; and curiosity blends itself, more or less, with all our pleasures. It is the nature of all greatness not to be exact. He that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves and sharpens our skill. Our antagonist is our helper.
