The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy
by Jacob Burckhardt
The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy by Jacob Burckhardt Jacob Burckhardt was born in 1818 in Basel, Switzerland. He studied history at the University of Berlin and taught art history and the Italian Renaissance in Berlin and Basel. His essay, as he called The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy, was first published in 1860. Rich in its detailed account of the arts, fashions, manners, and thought of one of the most innovative eras in human history, this brilliant panorama of Renaissance life is also a thorough examination of the nature of civilization and of our place within it. Burckhardt's encyclopedic knowledge, his mastery of style, and his genius for synthesis make this one of the few classics of history and the prototype for cultural history. Burckhardt's The Age of Constantine the Great and Cicerone were published in his lifetime, and

Burckhardt's famous thesis in DIE KULTUR DER RENAISSANCE IN ITALIEN (1860) was that Renaissance first gave the highest development to individuality. The early signs of "the modern European Spirit" were according to Burckhardt seen in Florence. Since the publication of his book, Florence has been regarded as the city where Petrarch's dream of revival took deepest root. "In the Middle Ages both sides of human consciousness - that which was turned within as that which was turned without - lay dreaming or half-awake beneath a common veil. The veil was woven of faith, illusion and childish prepossessions, through which the world and history were seen clad in strange hues. Man was conscious of himself only as a member of a race, people, party, family or corporation - only through some general category. In Italy this veil first melted into air; an objective treatment and consideration of the state and all things of this world became possible. The subjective side at the same time asserted with corresponding emphasis; man became a spiritual individual and recognized himself as such." (from The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy Jacob Christoph Burckhard was born in Basel as the son of a pastor. His family was one of the most distinguished in the city - eleven ancestors had served its

Harry Zohn, with a Foreword by Alberto R. Coll (Indianapolis: Liberty Fund, 1999). Return to the Biographical Introduction to Burckhardt Renowned for his Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy and Reflections on History (published by Liberty Fund), Jacob Burckhardt (1818–1897) has well been described as "the most civilized historian of the nineteenth century." Judgments on History and Historians consists of records collected by Emil Dürr from Burckhardt's lecture notes for history courses at the University of Basel from 1865 to 1885. The 149 brief sections span five eras: Antiquity, the Middle Ages, History from 1450 to 1598, the History of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, and the Age of Revolution. As Walter Goetz observed of the work a generation ago, "It is impossible to imagine a more profound introduction to world history and its driving forces."

    Jacob Burckhardt

    http://www.malhatlantica.pt/jorgefborges/renascim.htm
No século
