Born in the parish of Elstow, in Bedfordshire in November 1628, to Thomas Bunyan and Margaret Bentley (Thomas's first wife, Anne Pinney, had died the year before without any surviving children). Being born into a family with some afluence he was well educated throughout his childhood and adolesence.
In 1644 he enlisted in the Parliamentary army, joining with the Newport Pagnell garrison, at the regulation age of sixteen. In 1645 the garrison moved to Leicester. Most probably, it was here that one of Bunyan's comrades was shot. " When I was a soldier, I, with others, were drawn out to go to such a place to besiege it; but when I was just ready to go, one of the company desired to go in my room; to which, when I had consented, he took my place; and coming to the siege, as he stood sentinel, he was shot into the head with a musket bullet, and died.

The Pilgrim's Progress
Author Info: John Bunyan
As I walked through the wilderness of this world, I lighted on a certain place where was a Den, and
I laid me down in that place to sleep: and, as I slept, I dreamed a dream. I dreamed, and behold, I
saw a man clothed with rags, standing in a certain place, with his face from his own house, a book
in his hand, and a great burden upon his back. I looked, and saw him open the book, and read
therein; and, as he read, he wept, and trembled; and, not being able longer to contain, he brake out
with a lamentable cry, saying, "What shall I do?" In this plight, therefore, he went home and refrained himself as long as he could, that his wife and
children should not perceive his distress; but he could not be silent long, because that his trouble
increased. Wherefore at length he brake his mind to his wife and children; and thus he began to talk
to them: "O my dear wife, said he, and you the children of my bowels, I, your dear friend, am in

John Bunyan
Bunyan, John 1628-88), English writer and Puritan minister, author of The Pilgrim's Progress, one of the most famous religious allegories in the English language. About 1648 he married Margaret Bentley, a member of one of the Puritan sects of the day; Bunyan experienced a religious conversion and joined her church. With her, Bunyan talked of religion, and read in two books which he names: "The Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven", by Arthur Dent (first published in 1601), and "The Practice of Piety (1612). During the four years he went through a terrible spiritual struggle. In speaking of himself afterwards, he describes himself as the worst of sinners; but the only wickedness in which he is known to have indulged is "swearing, lying, and blaspheming", and from coarser vices he seems to have been free. The fury of his spiritual struggle, and the darkness of his own description of himself, both were due to the strength and depth of his own nature. While Bunyan was in prison his library consisted of the Bible and the Book of Martyrs by the theologian John Foxe. Studying the content and literary style of these works, Bunyan began to write religious tracts and pamphlets. Before his release he wrote the first of his major works, the spiritual autobiography Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1666).

http://www.gbronline.com/mcloud10/pilgrim3.html
A Short Biography
John Bunyan John Bunyan's encounter with God transformed a poorly-educated, blaspheming tinker into a bold preacher of the Gospel. As a Christian, Bunyan would also display a genius for writing, authoring more than sixty books including the classic The Pilgrim's Progress Born at Elstow, Bedfordshire, England in 1628, Bunyan attended school briefly, followed his fathers vocation of repairing household utensils (called a tinker ), and served in the parliamentary army during the English civil war. He then married a woman (whose name has been lost to history) who encouraged him to attend church, where he heard the Gospel. After a long internal struggle, Bunyan surrendered himself to Christ. Bunyan soon began to preach, and the obvious change in his life brought many people out to hear him. His messages, however, also drew the attention of government officials, who arrested him in 1660 for preaching without permission of the state church. Bunyan would spend the next twelve years in jail for his "non-conformist" ways. During his imprisonment, Bunyan wrote some of his best works, includinghis spiritual autobiography
