John Bunyan
John Bunyan was a Christian writer and preacher. He was the author of The Pilgrim's Progress
Bunyan wrote The Pilgrim's Progress , in two parts, of which the first appeared at London in 1678, and was at all events, begun during his imprisonment in 1676; the second in 1684. The earliest edition in which the two parts were combined in one volume was in 1728. A third part falsely attributed to Bunyan appeared in 1693, and was reprinted as late as 1852. The Pilgrim's Progress is the most successful allegory ever written, and like the Bible has been extensively translated into other languages. It has been commonly translated by Protestant missionaries as the first thing after the Bible. Two other works of Bunyan's would have given him fame, but not as wide as that he now enjoys; viz., The Life and Death of Mr. Badman (1680), an imaginary biography, and the allegory The Holy War (1682). The book which lays bare Bunyan's inner life and reveals his preparation for his appointed work is Grace Abounding to the chief of sinners Martin Luther 's Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians , in the translation of 1575. Some time before his final release from prison Bunyan became involved in a controversy with Kiffin, D'Anvers, Deune, Paul, and others. In 1673 he published his

Valley of Humiliation
HE that is down needs fear no fall,
He that is low, no pride;
He that is humble ever shall
Have God to be his guide. I am content with what I have,
Little be it or much:
And, Lord, contentment still I crave,
Because Thou savest such. Fullness to such a burden is
That go on pilgrimage:
Here little, and hereafter bliss,
Is best from age to age. Table of Contents Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Mr. Bunyan's Last Sermon: Preached August 19 th [ADVERTISEMENT BY THE EDITOR] This sermon, although very short, is peculiarly interesting: how it was preserved we are not told; but it bears strong marks of having been published from notes taken by one of the hearers. There is no proof that any memorandum or notes of this sermon was found in the autograph of the preacher. GEO. OFFOR. Mr. Bunyan's Last Sermon 'Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.' John 1:13 The words have a dependance on what goes before, and therefore I must direct you to them for the right understanding of it. You have it thus: 'He came unto his own, and his own received him not; but as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh - but of God.' In the words before, you have two things. First , Some of his own rejecting him, when he offered himself to them.

An Introduction from Judith Bronte "I have been amazed to discover how many people believe that John Bunyan only wrote one book, that being 'The Pilgrim's Progress'. It is true that 'The Pilgrim's Progress' has been the most published book in the world, second only to the Bible, however, John Bunyan wrote much more. He had over sixty published works, much of which has been sadly forgotten or passed over. This web site features approximately forty of John Bunyan's writings. Among them are 'Grace Abounding', 'The Holy War', 'The Life and Death of Mr. Badman', and of course, 'The Pilgrim's Progress', which features some old illustrations from the allegory. But, also be sure to check out Bunyan's lesser known works, such as, 'Christ a Complete Saviour', 'Ebal and Gerizzim', 'The Holy City', 'One Thing is Needful', which is a book of poetry, 'Saved By Grace', 'The Heavenly Footman', 'Seasonable Counsel', 'A Discourse of the House of the Forest of Lebanon', and many others. This web site is not an intellectual exploration of John Bunyan's life. My endeavor is to present him as he did himself... in his own words. Please feel free to take what you want from this web site. Republish it on the Internet, print out your favorites and pass them to friends, shout it from the rooftops, because John Bunyan's message holds as true as the day he wrote it.

Neither trouble your heads though you have not commentaries and exposition. Pray and read, read and pray; for a little from God is better than a great deal from men. Also, what is from men is uncertain, and is often lost and tumbled over by men; but what is from God is fixed as a nail in a sure place. There is nothing that so abides with us as what we receive from God; and the reason why the Christians in this day are at such a loss as to some things is that they are contented with what comes from men's mouths, without searching and kneeling before God to know of Him the truth of things. Things we receive at God's hands come to us as truths from the minting house, though old in themselves, yet new to us. Old truths are always new to us if they come with the smell of Heaven upon them.

John Bunyan and election "First to speak about my questioning my election, I found at this time that though I was very eager to find the way to heaven and glory, and though nothing could keep me from this, yet this question did so offend and discourage me that it was, especially sometimes, as if the very strength of my body had been taken away by the force and power thereof. Also this Scriptureseemed to me to trample upon all my desires: "It is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy" (Romans 9:16). With this Scripture I could not tell what to do, for I clearly saw that unless God in His infinite grace and bounty had voluntarily chosen me to be a vessel of mercy, although I should desire and long and labor until my heart did break, it would be to no avail. Therefore these questions would stick with me: "How can you tell that you are elected? And what if you are not? What then?" "O Lord," I cried, "what if I am not indeed?" "Maybe you are not," said the tempter.
