Welcome to Elsfield Church!
This church has stood here for nearly 800 years. It was built mostly between 1200 and 1250, and in 1273 was consecrated and dedicated to St Thomas of Canterbury. Thomas Becket was one of the most popular saints of the middle ages. He was Chancellor to Henry II, and a friend and companion of the King in many secular pursuits. But when the King appointed Becket as Archbishop of Canterbury, thinking that he would have the powerful Church in his pocket, he underestimated the power of God. Becket experienced a kind of 'conversion' which convinced him that from now on his duty was to God, rather than his former friend. He adopted a lifestyle of prayer and austerity. He stood up for the rights of the Church and soon found himself in opposition to the King. The King's well-known outburst, "Who will rid me of this turbulent priest?" led to the Archbishop's murder at the hand of some of the King's knights, within the very walls of Canterbury Cathedral. His murder on 29th December, 1170, sent a tremor through the Christian world. Becket was immediately acclaimed a martyr for the faith. The King was forced to make a public and humiliating act of penance, Becket was canonised within 3 years, and his shrine at Canterbury became the most popular pilgrim centre in Britain. Chaucer's Canterbury Tales bears witness to its continuing popularity over 200 years later.

In the course of his business and militia endeavors, Andrew is captured by Indians who begin to roast him alive. Because he remains resolute as flames lick his legs, the Indians release him for man-to-man combat, in which he kills his opponent. Consequently, he is released. Andrew also routs the insane leader of an obscure religious sect-a man Andrew had previously encountered in Scotland-who sees his own divine calling as sponsoring an Indian attack on Virginia. Andrew gives Muckle John Gib new orders "from God," sending him further inland with his followers.
A love interest permeates the story; Andrew eventually wins the hand of the heiress Elspeth, whom he'd first heard singing-and who'd mocked him-in Scotland. The story ends with a rapid account of the several years since Elspeth accepted his proposal, the last action of the story.

Friday, August 1, 2003 New Walk Highlights Borders Ties to Famous Author The author and diplomat John Buchan (1875-1940) was born in Perth, but later moved with his family to the Borders. Buchan’s enormously varied career included the roles of Editor of The Spectator, Director of Information (during World War I) and Governor-General of Canada. The last also involved his elevation to the peerage as Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield. John Buchan is probably best remembered as the author of the novel "The Thirty-Nine Steps", but some of his other works were inspired by the Borders. Stories such as "On Cademuir Hill", "John Burnet of Barns" and the "Witch Wood" highlight Buchan's fondness for the area. His first published piece of work was "Sentimental Travelling" (1894) which describes a walk from upper Tweeddale to Moffat (Annandale). It was Buchan’s love of the Peeblesshire countryside that inspired the development of the John Buchan Way, which stretches some 22km (13 miles), from Peebles to Broughton, takes in part of Cademuir Hill and passes close to Barns Tower. A leaflet describing the route is available from Visitor Information Centres and other outlets, including the John Buchan Centre in Broughton, close to the terminus of the route. The route was implemented by Philippa Parrish and Roger Smith of Scottish BorderPaths (SBP). SBP is a partnership of Scottish Borders Council, Scottish Natural Heritage, Scottish Borders Tourist Board, Scottish Enterprise Borders and Paths For All. The aim of the partnership is to improve access to the countryside of the Scottish Borders by supporting the rural economy by developing local path networks and longer distance routes. Much of the funding for routes such as the John Buchan Way is provided by the European Regional Development Fund.

John Buchan (Lord Tweedsmuir) Author, Publisher and Statesman Meet John Buchan Lord Tweedsmuir of Elsfield (1875-1940) But Buchan's health problems didn't deter him from enjoying the outdoor life throughout his career he enthusiastic participated in mountain climbing, stalking and fishing. He was also intensely interested in exploration of the remaining unknown areas of the world and wrote about all of these in both his fictional and nonfictional works. His love of the outdoors was fostered as a result of spending his youthful summer holidays in upper Tweedsdale area where his matemal grandparents lived. The title he choose when he was made a peer before going to Canada was clearly a result of his identification with this area. AIthough he complained about the time wasted in 'going out', he didn't neglect the social side of things and, in particular, he enjoyed the clubs of London, country-house weekends and Highland hunting lodges, all of which feature in his writings. At age thirty-two he married Susan Grosvenor whose father Norman was rich and well connected. Their marriage was an especially happy one and they raised three sons and a daughter. After WW I, they bought Elsfield Manor, an estate outside Oxford in the Cotswold country and this became the source of another enthusiasm and the need for more writing to pay for it.
