British Records Relating to America in Microform Collections
This series of microfilm collections is published by Microform Limited (formerly EP Microform) of East Ardsley, Yorkshire, England in conjunction with the British Association for American Studies. The series ranges in time from the colonial period to the twentieth century, and in place from Quebec to the West Indies. The collections relate to trade, industry, plantations, agriculture, immigration, the anti-slavery movement, politics, and military affairs. Located in various British archival collections, the papers selected contribute to the understanding of American history usually through the business and personal affairs of British subjects. Introductions at the beginning of each filmed collection explain the provenance and the historical background for each collection. Guide: SPEC-R Z1236.C74 1979 Raimo, John W. (ed.). A Guide to Manuscripts Relating to America in Great Britain and Ireland . The guide briefly describes various collections in this series. Each collection in Ellis Library is listed in the card catalog and/or MERLIN , the online catalog, although individual theses and dissertations are not yet listed in MERLIN.

Let's take a look at some of the "Cast of Characters," during and around the time of the Armenian "Genocide." (Linked names have pages or sections dedicated to them on this TAT web site.) THE BRITISH Lord Curzon George Nathaniel Curzon (1859 – 1925); English statesman. India's most celebrated and eloquent Viceroy, a position he held from 1899 to 1905; created Viscount, 1911; Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, 1919-1924. A quote: "Dear me, I never knew that the lower classes had such white skins." Desperate in 1921 to prove the Turks imprisoned at Malta guilty of atrocities, Lord Curzon informed Sir A. Geddes, the British Ambassador at Washington, that there was a 'considerable difficulty' in establishing proof of guilt and requested him 'to ascertain if United States Government are in possession of any evidence that could be of value for purpose of prosecution.' He got the famous, " I regret to inform Your Lordship ..." reply. Lord Curzon

The popularly elected indigenous Chief Magistrate was replaced by an appointed foreign-nobody named Colonel Warner Wright Spalding; a complete non-entity whose only
distinction appears to be, having once live in Macksville, NSW, cf. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps/rsvp/smhrsvp7.htm
At the outset it should be noted that the Australasian colonial authorities had very little to do with this fiasco; Viscount Hampden was merely a factotum - an obedient monkey waltzing to the tune of organ-grinders back in London.
The chief organ-grinder was of course Joseph Chamberlain, who was appointed Secretary of State for the Colonies immediately upon the accession to power of the 3rd instantiation of Lord Salisbury's Conservative and Unionist government, on 25th June 1895. Viscount Hampden was appointed New South Wales Governor during the same month - presumably by Chamberlain, in consultation with Salisbury - and arrived in Sydney on 21 November 1895.
In addition to being a staunch Univeralist Unitarian, Chamberlain was a zealous Imperialist - in fact, the 'auteur' of Britain's 'Doctrine of Commercial Imperialism' in the twilight of the Victorian era, cf.

Henry Charles Lea Papers - Scope and Content
Correspondence According to the Lea's biographer, Sculley Bradley, Lea destroyed his early correspondence (prior to 1860). There is some significant correspondence during the Civil War, but the bulk of correspondence in these files dates from 1868 to 1909. Very little material in these papers is revealing of Lea's personal life or family relations. One very early letter (undated, ca. 1837) was written by Lea to his parents while he and his brother Carey were staying with relatives; there also is a single page from a letter that appears to be from his mother, Frances Anne Carey Lea, to Lea in 1853. An interesting group of ten items from his father, Isaac, to Henry C. Lea were written while Henry was sailing on his yacht through New England waters during the summer of 1881; these letters describe the assassination of President Garfield. Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, and Theodore Roosevelt were among Lea's correspondents, and there is a letter from Woodrow Wilson addressed to Arthur H. Lea, written when Wilson was president of Princeton University. Other United States officials to whom Lea wrote include James M. Beck (1861-1936), solicitor general of the United States; Dorman B. Eaton (1823-1899) of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, who drafted the Pendleton Act of 1883; and Noah H. Swayne of the United States Supreme Court. Lea corresponded with the following who were or later became mayors of Philadelphia: Rudolph Blankenburg (1843-1918); Edwin H. Fitler; Daniel M. Fox; Alexander Henry (1823-1883); W. S. Stokely, and John Weaver. Other prominent Philadelphians among his correspondents are: John J. Ridgway, Jr.; Joseph Wharton (1826-1909); William Sellers (1824-1905); Horace Howard Furness (1833-1912); and his father, the Rev. William H. Furness (1802-1896). Lea's papers are a source of information about the Wistar Association, open only to members of the American Philosophical Society, and the Wistar Party, of which Lea was dean for many years.
