The young Brownson
Biography
Orestes Augustus Brownson, philosopher, minister, essayist, and reviewer, was born in Stockbridge, Vermont in 1803. Two years later his father Sylvester Augustus Brownson died, leaving his family in a financially difficult situation. Relief Metcalf, Orestes' mother, sent him to Royalton, Vermont. There he lived in a Puritan/Calvinistic atmosphere with a couple of elderly farmers until he was fourteen. Brownson became an avid reader despite the fact that during his Royalton years he only read a few books, all of them religious. He attended different churches there and developed his critical skills by comparing their sermons. At fourteen he returned to his family; his mother moved to New York State. He received a modest education then and worked in a printer's office. The range of his readings broadened significantly; he read Aristotle, St.Augustine, Abbate Gioberti, Pierre Leroux, Plato Suarez, St.Thomas, and many others. Brownson began to teach when he was twenty, first in Stillwater, N.Y., then in Detroit. Three years later he became a Universalist preacher, then the editor of the Universalistic theological journal Gospel Advocate But the teaching and preaching did not occupy his entire time. In his twenties O.Brownson was an active democrat. He supported the Workingman's Party that advocated the Owen-Wright theory of education, which envisioned two year olds starting their state-controlled and state-provided education. Brownson, then editor of "Genesee Republican" and " Herald of Reform," supported the Owen-Wright theory, but he also expressed his concern about the possible outcome of such education. He predicted a fall of parental authority and children being shaped into the " well-trained animals" ("The Convert,"

He was one of the founders, in New York, of the short-lived Workingm ans party in 1828, and established the Boston Quarterly Review, mainly written by himself, in 1838. This periodical was merired iii the US, Desnn,-rntir Review of New York in iR~i2. After his death, his son, Henry F. Brownson, collected and published his various political, religious, philosophical, scientific and literary writings, in twenty octavo volumes (Detroit, I 8831887), of which a condensed summary appeared in a single volume, also prepared by his son, entitled Literary and Political Views (New York, 1893). The son also published a biography in three volumes (Detroit, 1898-1900). His daughter, Sarah M. Brownson (1839-1876), who married in 1873 William J. Introduction
This pamphlet and the accompanying rolls of microfilm represent the first microfilm edition of manuscripts published by the University of Notre Dame Archives under the sponsorship of the National Historical Publications Commission. In the task of preparing the Brownson Collection for microfilming we have been ably assisted by Mr. Gregory Wulle and Mr. Richard Przybysz. The alphabetical list of correspondents has been largely the work of our able typist, Mrs. Janet Ubelhart. A debt of gratitude is owed to Dr. Oliver W. Holmes, to the National Historical Publications Commission, and especially to Mr. Fred Shelley of that Commission for his wise counsel and encouragement. The information acquired at the February 1966 meeting at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. of representatives from institutions preparing microfilm publications under grants from the Commission has been invaluable.

    Religious philosopher
A Vermont Calvinist, Orestes Brownson spent his seventy-three years on a religious pilgrimage that included Presbyterianism, Universalism, his own Society for Christian Union and Progress, and finally, Roman Catholicism. He wrote prodigiously on such topics as labor and social reform, transcendentalism, states' rights, nativism, and emancipation; and he demonstrated his versatility in the writing of mystical poetry. After converting to the Roman Catholic Church in 1844, he devoted his journal, Brownson's Quarterly Review , to the spread of Catholic doctrine. He recounted his inner experiences in The Convert; or, Leaves from My Experience
