Robert Browning Robert Browning was born 7 May 1812 to Robert Browning and Sarah Wiedemann. Robert's father was a wealthy bank clerk who owned a library filled with 6,000 books. As a child he relished in his father's very eclectic library and was well versed in the Classics. At 16 he attended London University. His first published work was called "Pauline." This poem showed that Robert was promising. Though his ego suffered quite a blow from it because he was very ambitious and wanted to be The greatest poet. Robert's attention was taken to Elizabeth Barrett Browning's poetry. He wrote her a thank you note for a mention in one of her poems. They met at a party, one evening at Elizabeth's house. They eloped to Italy that year because Elizabeth's father would not give his permission for them to wed. Together they had a son, Robert Wiedemann Barrett Browning. The fame of his wife obscured that of Robert's. He moved back to London after her death in 1861. His novel

HEAP cassia, sandal-buds and stripes
Of labdanum, and aloe-balls,
From out her hair: such balsam falls
Down sea-side mountain pedestals,
From tree-tops where tired winds are fain,
Spent with the vast and howling main,
To treasure half their island-gain. And strew faint sweetness from some old
Or shredded perfume, like a cloud
Mouldering her lute and books among,
As when a queen, long dead, was young.
The Wanderers
OVER the sea our galleys went,
With cleaving prows in order brave A gallant armament: Each bark built out of a forest-tree Left leafy and rough as first it grew, Within and without, with black bull-hides, Seethed in fat and suppled in flame, So, each good ship was rude to see, Rude and bare to the outward view. But each upbore a stately tent Where cedar pales in scented row Kept out the flakes of the dancing brine, In fold on fold of the purple fine, That neither noontide nor star-shine Nor moonlight cold which maketh mad, Might pierce the regal tenement.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Robert Browning (1812-1889) English poet, noted for his mastery of dramatic monologue. Robert Browning was long unsuccesful as a poet and financially dependent upon his family until he was well into adulthood. In his best works people from the past reveal their thoughts and lives as if speaking or thinking aloud. "Be sure I looked up her eyes
Happy and proud; at last I knew
Porphyria worshipped me; surprise
Made my heart swell, and still it grew
While I debated what to do.
That moment she was mine, mine, fair,
Perfectly pure and good; I found
A thing to do, and all her hair
In one long yellow string I wound
Three times her little throat around, And strangled her. No pain felt she; I am quite sure she felt no pain."
(from 'Porphyria's Lover' in Dramatic Lyrics Robert Browning was born in Camberwell, south London, as the son of Robert Browning, a wealthy clerk in the Bank of England, and Sarah Anna Wiedemann, of German-Scottish origin. Robert Browning Senior had spent in his youth some time on the Caribbean island of St Kitts, where he become disgusted at the slaves' treatment. Back at England, he thought of a career of an artist, but eventually accepted his job at the bank. Sarah Anna loved music and gardening. The historian Thomas Carlyle called her "the true type of a Scottish gentlewoman". Browning received scant formal education. However, his father encouraged him to read and he had access to his large (6,000 vols) library. The book collection filled most of the third storey at the family's house at New Cross. In his teens, Browning discovered

R obert Browning was a Victorian poet who is best known for his experimentation with the dramatic monologue and his marriage to fellow poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Born in Camberwell, a London suburb in 1812, Robert Browning was the son of a bank clerk and a kindly, religious-minded woman. During his early years, Browning attended boarding school, traveled a little, and was a student at the University of London for a short time, but in actuality was rarely absent from his parents’ home until he married at age 34. In 1833, Browning published his first poem, Pauline , a very personal poem. However, an unfavorable review overwhelmed him with embarrassment, and from then on, Browning wrote with obscurity. Browning also tried his hand as a playwright in his early years. His first play, Strafford , was produced in London in 1837, but only lasted four nights. For the next ten years, Browning continued to write plays, but as stage productions, all were failures. However, his play writing led him to explore the dramatic monologue. In 1842, his first collection of dramatic monologues

Robert Browning (1812 - 1889)
Robert Browning was born on May 7, 1812, in Camberwell (a suburb of London), the first child of Robert and Sarah Anna Browning. His mother was a fervent Evangelical and an accomplished pianist. Mr. Browning had angered his own father and forgone a fortune: the poet's grandfather had sent his son to oversee a West Indies sugar plantation, but the young man had found the institution of slavery so abhorrent that he gave up his prospects and returned home, to become a clerk in the Bank of England. On this very modest salary he was able to marry, raise a family, and to acquire a library of 6000 volumes. He was an exceedingly well-read man who could recreate the seige of Troy with the household chairs and tables for the benefit of his inquisitive son. Indeed, most of the poet's education came at home. He was an extremely bright child and a voracious reader (he read through all fifty volumes of the Biographie Universelle ) and learned Latin, Greek, French and Italian by the time he was fourteen. He attended the University of London in 1828, the first year it opened, but left in discontent to pursue his own reading at his own pace. This somewhat idiosyncratic but extensive education has led to difficulties for his readers: he did not always realize how obscure were his references and allusions.
