Artemus Ward and Abe Lincoln
When Artemus Ward began touring with his comic lecture in 1861, his letters-to-the-editor were already famous. Abraham Lincoln admired the stories of the "Old Showman" who travels the country with his wax figure exhibit, narrates his adventures, and dispenses advice. In fact, on September 22, 1862, Lincoln read aloud a Ward sketch, "High-Handed Outrage at Utica" , to his cabinet. When Edwin M. Stanton, secretary of war, and others members appeared angry at humor in such serious times, Lincoln said, "Gentlemen...with the fearful strain that is upon me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die, and you need this medicine as much as I do." He then picked up the papers in front of him and read out the Emancipation Proclamation.
Stanton later wrote that "with great enthusiasm I arose, approached the President, extended my hand and said: 'Mr. President, if reading the chapters of Artemus Ward is a prelude to a deed such as this, the book should be filed among the archives of the nation and its author should be canonized.'" "Artemus Ward" was a carnival manager who commented on current events with a New England accent, bad grammar, and misspelled words. Browne, Charles Farrar
Humorist, best known under the pseudonym of Artemus Ward ( ). His literary apprenticeship was served as compositor and reporter on various newspapers, and in his burlesque descriptions of prize-fights, political meetings, etc., in the "Cleveland Plaindealer," won national attention. Shortly afterwards he went to New York and subsequently became the editor of "Vanity Fair" in which paper many of his humorous sketches appeared. His success as a lecturer, however, distracted his attention from his journalistic work, and in he sailed for England, where a successful engagement in London was cut short by the illness which caused his death a few months later. His humor was spontaneous, wholesome, and distinctly American . He died a Catho1ic.
