Part 7
The outbreak of the Civil War seriously threatened a large intersectional trade which Newark had established with the South. As an offset, however, to the manufacturers' fears, the war boomed industry; hat and shoe factories operated at full capacity to fill army orders and a general prosperity was enjoyed. A visit from Abraham Lincoln en route to his first Washington inaugural helped to solidify community sentiment. Newark sent 10,000 to the Union armies. Modern Newark dates from the close of the Civil War. An industrial exposition in 1872 showed that the city was becoming more and more diversified in its manufacturing interests, although brewing, jewelry, and leather still maintained the lead. But while these industries were at their peak, the scientific age was beginning to transform completely the city's industrial character. In 1869 John Wesley Hyatt invented celluloid and laid the basis for the important plastic industry. Eighteen years later the Rev. Hannibal Goodwin developed a process which later turned celluloid into film for photographic negatives. Thomas A. Edison's invention of the electric light bulb in nearby Menlo Park was responsible for the rise of a new industry in Newark. Later Edward Weston carried on the Edison tradition with many important electrical inventions.

NOAH BROOKS
Portrait of Noah Brooks painted in 1881 by his grandniece Marian Lois Wright. The Museum acquired this portrait in 1972 through the generosity of five gentlemen from Castine: Anthony L. Michel, Hamilton B. Mitchell, Edward A. Rogers, Francis W. Hatch and Frederick B. Dodge.
Marian L. McMaster was born July 21, 1861, at Eureka IL to Margaret Barker (Upham) and Dr. Zalon James McMaster who died in the Civil War. Marian’s last name was later changed to Wright, her stepfather's name. She began her interest in art at Pennedepie, near Honfleur in Normandy (her mother having gone abroad with her children in 1874) under William Hennessy, an Irish-American artist, and returned to this country in 1880. Marian signed her paintings for a few years "Marian Louise," but otherwise as “M. L. Wright.” She married at Cambridge, MA, April 6, 1887, Prof. Isaac Adolphe Cohn, of Harvard University. They had a son Albert Cohn, b. Feb. 10, 1888. She died in Feb.19, 1888.
Barker, then nearly thirty, had, no doubt, learned shipbuilding while helping his father and had probably already established his own business at Castine.
