Skyros Guide Hotel Entertainment Photo ... English Statue of eternal poetry. Rupert Brooke A few metres inward from the day is the grave of the English poet Rupert Brooke, who died and was buried here, following his wish, on the 23rd of April 1915, at the age of 28, while serving in the British Navy during World War I , His statue stands in a beautiful square at the north-eastern point of the village, near the archaeological museum and the chapel of Agia Triada. This statue symbolizes eternal poetry. There are two inscriptions engraved on both sides of the base : "This monument was erected in 1930 following contributions on an international scale – ‘Now that I have seen the sacred land of Attiki I can die’" and "To Rupert Brooke 1887 – 1915 to eternal poetry". He unveiling took place on the 5th of April 1931, by the then Prime Minister of Greece, Eleftherios Venizelos, and was attended by many Greek and foreign dignitaries. Rupert Brooke

Name and title:
Rupert Chawner Brooke Dates: Born: 3rd August 1887 in Rugby, Britain Died: 23rd April 1915 on Skyros, Greece Biography of Rupert Brooke: Poet, academic, campaigner and aesthete who died serving in World War One, but not before his verse and literary friends established him as one of the great poet-soldiers. Born in 1887, Rupert Brooke experienced a comfortable childhood in a rarified atmosphere, living around - and then attending - the school at Rugby, a famed British institution where his father worked as a housemaster. The boy soon grew into a man whose handsome figure transfixed admirers of either sex: almost six foot tall, he was academically clever, good at sports - representing the school in cricket and, of course, rugby - and disarming in character. He was also highly creative: Rupert wrote verse throughout his childhood, having allegedly gained a love of poetry from reading Browning.

And lights that shine are shut again,
Behind the gateways of the brain;
And that no-place which gave them birth, shall close
The rainbow and the rose:— Still may Time hold some golden space
Of song and flower and sky and face,
Musing upon them: as a mother, who
Has watched her children all the rich day through,
Sits, quiet-handed, in the fading light,
When children sleep, ere night.

    on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 01:23 PM LOVE is a breach in the walls, a broken gate, Where that comes in that shall not go again; Love sells the proud heart’s citadel to Fate. They have known shame, who love unloved. Even then, When two mouths, thirsty each for each, find slaking, And agony’s forgot, and hushed the crying Of credulous hearts, in heaven—such are but taking Their own poor dreams within their arms, and lying Each in his lonely night, each with a ghost. Some share that night. But they know love grows colder, Grows false and dull, that was sweet lies at most.

    November 11, 2001 As a legend in the minds and hearts of the modern English people, Rupert Brooke has a place with such luminaries as T. E. Lawrence, Florence Nightingale, and Lord Byron. This legend, as we still understand him, was born in the spring of 1915, and nurtured by several powerful controlling factors. Let us discover what happened to make a jealous, moody, ill-balanced young man, a poet gifted but flawed and of uneven quality, whose Puritan upbringing often struggled against the rebellious forces expressed in the neo-paganism of his Bloomsbury friends, become the warrior-icon, the symbol of all English young manhood that perished in the fields and trenches of Europe during 1914-1918. The first and most important of these legend-building events happened on Easter Sunday, 1915. His series of war sonnets had just been published in New Numbers , the second (and last) volume of a journal edited by two of his very good friends. The Dean of St. Paul’s had preached on a text from Isaiah and read, as illustration, the entire sonnet, “If I should die” and commented on its enthusiasm and elevated patriotism. If I should die, think only this of me: That there’s some corner of a foreign field That is forever England. There shall be In that rich earth a richer dust concealed; A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware, Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam, A body of England’s, breathing English air, Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home. And think, this heart, all evil shed away, A pulse in the eternal mind, no less Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given; Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day; And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness, In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.
