Brooke, Rupert (1887-1915) The English poet Rupert Brooke was bisexual, reflecting his sexuality in both his letters and his poetry. Rupert Brooke was born on August 3, 1887, and died at the age of twenty-seven while on his way to fight at Gallipoli. Because his death followed shortly after the publication of five sonnets extolling the virtues of patriotic sacrifice, Brooke's tragic early death (and, no doubt, his good looks) became inextricably linked in the public mind with his sonnets glorifying war, and a national hero was bornone bearing little resemblance to the actual man. Sponsor Message.
To maintain the patriotic legend, Brooke's first literary executor, Geoffrey Keynes, spent a lifetime trying to downplay Brooke's attraction to men. However, until December 1907, when Brooke was twenty years old, he neverin his personal relationships or in his lettersexhibited any attraction to the opposite sex. When Keynes edited a collection of Brooke's letters, even he felt compelled to allow into print some of them from Brooke's schoolboy days describing crushes on other boystwo in particularalthough their names (Charles Lascelles and Michael Sadleir) were deleted by Keynes. Brooke's love for these two boys was deeply felt (particularly in the case of Lascelles), but it was not until the age of twenty-two that he engaged in sex with another man, Denham Russell Smith, the younger brother of a friend.

IV. The Dead
by Rupert Brooke These hearts were woven of human joys and cares,
Washed marvellously with sorrow, swift to mirth.
The years had given them kindness. Dawn was theirs,
And sunset, and the colours of the earth.
These had seen movement, and heard music; known
Slumber and waking; loved; gone proudly friended;
Felt the quick stir of wonder; sat alone;
Touched flowers and furs and cheeks. All this is ended. There are waters blown by changing winds to laughter
And lit by the rich skies, all day. And after, Frost, with a gesture, stays the waves that dance And wandering loveliness. He leaves a white Unbroken glory, a gathered radiance, A width, a shining peace, under the night. Back to Rupert Brooke poems: 1914... Page last updated: 1 February 1999

Add to a Notebook Rupert Brooke English poet Rupert Chawner Brooke was born in 1887. The son of the Rugby School's housemaster, Brooke excelled in both academics and athletics. He entered his father's school at the age of fourteen. A lover of verse since the age of nine, he won the school poetry prize in 1905. A year later, he attended King's College, Cambridge, where he was known for his striking good looks, charm, and intellect. While at Cambridge, he developed an interest in acting and was president of the University Fabian Society. Brooke published his first poems in 1909; his first book, Poems , appeared in 1911. While working on his dissertation on John Webster and Elizabethan dramatists, he lived in the house that he made famous by his poem "The Old Vicarage, Grantchester." Popular in both literary and political circles, he befriended Winston Churchill, Henry James, and members of the Bloomsbury Group, including Virginia Woolf. Although he was popular, Brooke had a troubled love life. Between 1908 and 1912 he fell in love with three women: Noel Olivier, youngest daughter of the governor of Jamaica; Ka Cox, who preceded him as president of the Fabian Society; and Cathleen Nesbitt, an Irish actress. None of the relationships were long lasting. In 1912, after his third romance failed, Brooke left England to travel in France and Germany for several months. Upon his return to England, Brooke received a fellowship at King's College and spent time in both Cambridge and London. In 1912 he compiled an anthology entitled

    Rupert Brooke was born August 3, 1887, at Rugby, Warwickshire, and educated there and at King's College, Cambridge, which he left with a degree in 1909. His first book of verse, Poems , came out in 1911. After studying briefly in Munich in 1912, he returned to live in England at the Old Vicarage in Grantchester, Cambridgeshire. The next year he travelled abroad in Canada, the United States, and the south seas, particularly Taihiti, where he loved a native woman named Taata Mata. At the start of War World I, Brooke joined the Hood Battalion of the British Naval Division and served in the attack on Antwerp. Over the winter he trained at Blandford Camp in Dorsetshire. His five famous war sonnets appeared in

    1914 II. Safety
    Dear! of all happy in the hour, most blest He who has found our hid security, Assured in the dark tides of the world that rest, And heard our word, 'Who is so safe as we?' We have found safety with all things undying, The winds, and morning, tears of men and mirth, The deep night, and birds singing, and clouds flying, And sleep, and freedom, and the autumnal earth. We have built a house that is not for Time's throwing. We have gained a peace unshaken by pain for ever. War knows no power. Safe shall be my going, Secretly armed against all death's endeavour; Safe though all safety's lost; safe where men fall; And if these poor limbs die, safest of all.

    famous and idolised poet of the First World War
    RUPERT BROOKE 1887-1915 Almost all who met Rupert Brooke fell under the power of his charismatic personality, and his spell lasts to the present day. In spite of all the well deserved adverse criticism of his famous war sonnets he still has many admirers. There are two recent biographies of him. One came out in 1997 (by Mike Read); Rupert Brooke: Life, Death and Myth by Nigel Jones was published in October 1999 (320 pages, hardback, Richard Cohen Books), and a film about him is due out soon. The Rupert Brooke Society was launched on August 24th 1999. (Contact Susan Moore on 01223 845 788 or fax 01223 845 862. email rbs@callan.co.uk) Brooke's importance as a poet lies partly in the extraordinary success he enjoyed as a spokesman for popular attitudes and beliefs in the opening months of the First World War. The selfless heroic gesture which he expressed in such beautiful and modest terms is still very appealing. Sadly, his verse should not be taken at face value; the heroism was a mask that hid the tragedy of his life.
    For a brief account of his life see the extract from Minds at War . There is more in Minds at War about Brooke, (about 16 pages) including all his war sonnets, his contrastingly sober last poem
