, English writer noted for her novel Jane Eyre
Charlotte was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, in the north of England, the daughter of an Anglican clergyman who moved with his family to Haworth amid the Yorkshire moors in 1820. After their mother and two eldest children died, Charlotte was left with her sisters Emily and Anne and brother Branwell to the care of their father, and their strict, religious aunt, Elisabeth Branwell. The children created imaginary kingdoms, which were built around Branwell's toy soldiers, and which inspired them to write continuing sagas about the fantasylands of Angria and Gondal.
Charlotte attended the Clergy Daughter's School at Cowan Bridge in 1824. She returned home next year because of the harsh conditions. In 1831 she went to school at Roe Head, where she later worked as a teacher. However, she fell ill, suffered from melancholia, and gave up this post. Charlotte's attempts to earn her living as a governess were hindered by her disabling shyness, her ignorance of normal children, and her yearning to be with her sisters.

Anne Bronte Charlotte Bronte Emily Bronte For the next few years, the Bronte children were taught at home. They invented games and told imaginary stories to each other. Charlotte attended Miss Wooler's school at Roe Head for one year in 1831, then returned home and taught her sisters. Charlotte returned to Roe Head as a teacher in 1835, but after suffering from depression and ill health, she resigned from her position. It was at Roe Head that Charlotte met her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey. Her many letters to Nussey have served as the best documentation of her life. The Bronte sisters worked in various schools during the next few years. Anne worked briefly as a governess in 1839 and from 1841-1845. Emily spent several months teaching at Miss Patchett's school at Law Hill. Charlotte and Emily had plans to open their own school at Haworth, and in 1842, they travelled to Brussels at their aunt's expense to learn German and improve their French. When their aunt died 8 months later, the sisters returned for the funeral. Emily never returned to Brussels, but Charlotte returned as a pupil-teacher. Her time in Belgium was not happy, in part because of her attraction to her married employer. Charlotte returned to Haworth the next year. The dream of opening a school was never realised. In the autumn of 1845, Charlotte discovered some poems written by Emily. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne soon realised they had all been secretly writing verse. The next year, they published a book of poems at their own expense entitled Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. The pseudonyms were chosen to match the first letter of their names. They only sold two copies of the book, but each sister already had additional writing plans in the works.

    Charolotte Bronte
Charlotte Brontë was a British author, 1816-1855. She was born at Thornton in Yorkshire, eldest surviving daughter of a clergyman, Patrick Bronte (who had changed his surname from Brunty or Prunty). In 1820, the family moved to the now world-famous rectory at Haworth, where the children created their own fantasy world which would inspire them to take up writing. In 1835, Charlotte returned to her former school to work as a teacher, a career in which she continued, on and off, for several years. In 1846, she and her two younger sisters, Anne and Emily published a joint collection of poetry, under male pseudonyms, Charlotte going by the name of Currer Bell. Her novels are: Jane Eyre , published 1847; Shirley , published 1849; Villette , published 1853; and The Professor , published 1857. In 1854, Charlotte married Arthur Bell Nicholls, a curate, and became pregnant, but died in the following year. The family moved to the Haworth parsonage in 1820, (picture one), which is now the Bronte Parsonage Museum. Picture two shows the main street with the Black Bull public house on the right, a regular drinking haunt of Branwell, their brother. The Bronte family are not buried in the churchyard but in a vault beneath the church itself. Anne Bronte, the youngest of the three sisters, died in Scarborough and is buried in St. Mary's churchyard, overlooking the sea. All died of tuberculosis at a young age. Charlotte (1816-1855) was 38, Emily (1818-1848) died aged 30, and Anne was only 29 when she died in 1849. Patrick outlived all his family and died in 1861 at the age of 84. There were three other children in the family apart from the famous authors - Maria 1814-1825, Elizabeth 1815-1825 and his only son, Branwell 1817-1848.

Emily, the most introspective of the Brontë sisters was briefly educated at school but so disliked being away from her home that she returned and continued with more informal schooling. Her early attempts at writing included poetry. Her work conveys a sense of mystery and longing that she experienced in her life. Her only novel, Wuthering Heights , is considered to be technically brilliant, with forthright and passionate language used to tell a fascinating saga. The brilliance of this novel was only acknowledged after her painful death from tuberculosis.

Theme Search Advanced Search The Ebookstore is a trademark of Unitel Inc Charlotte Bronte English Author A tragic destiny The third daughter of the Rev. Patrick Bronte and his wife Maria, had a tragic destiny. A year later, Charlotte discovered Emily's poems which she decided to publish under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. Charlotte wrote then The Professor, which couldn't find any publisher, but the following year, her Jane Eyre, Emily's Wurthering Heights, and Ann's Agnes Grey were all published under the Bell pseudonyms. In 1848, her brother Branwell died, after he had become an alcoholic and a drug addict. Emily died a few months later, and Ann died the following year. At the age of 4 she lost her mother, being then the eldest of a family of 4. In 1826, after Mr. Bront‰ had brought home a box of wooden soldiers for his son to play with, Charlotte, Emily, Branwell and Ann, playing with the soldiers, formed the idea of writing about an imaginary world, which they named Angria. In 1844, the three Bront‰ sisters decided to found a school. It turned to a great disaster. In 1852, the Rev. Nicholls proposed marriage to Charlotte. Her father opposed himself violently at first. Charlotte, who was not in love, refused him. They finally got married in 1854, but Charlotte caught a pneumonia while she was expecting a child, and probably seized upon this illness as an opportunity to end her life. Charlotte died in 1855 after a long and painful illness.
