MRS. CHARLOTTE MARY BRAME (1836-1884) Mir wird von alle dem so dumm,
Als ging' mir ein Muhlrad im Kopf herum.
GOETHE: Faust, Part 1, lines 1605-6 Charlotte Mary Brame, a writer of mushy love stories for the English lower classes, and immensely popular, was born at Hinckley, Leicester, England, November 1, 1836, the eldest daughter of Benjamin and Charlotte Agnes Law. She wrote poems for the local press while still a child, and at seventeen published her first short story. In January, 1863, she was married in Hinckley to Philip E. Brame, a London jeweler, and by him had nine children of whom only four lived to maturity. After her marriage, she and her husband removed to London, where they lived for a few years, then went to Manchester and, in the middle 1860's, to Brighton. In 1879 they returned to Hinckley on account of Charlotte's health, and there she died November 25, 1884. Mrs. Brame was a voluminous writer, contributing mostly to various London periodicals. Few of her stories appeared in book form during her lifetime, but after her death they were published in many editions, both in England and in America. She was the real simon-pure "Bertha M. Clay" and "Dora Thorne." Street and Smith, of New York, published her stories under a special contract from advance sheets for ten years. In the New York Weekly

Charlotte M. Brame (Later known as Bertha M. Clay)

In the words of the Albert Johansson, the prodigious chronicler of The House of Beadle of Adams , Charlotte M. Brame was "a writer of mushy love stories for the English lower classes" (40) in the mid to late nineteenth century. She certainly wrote love stories, and they were intended for working-class audiences, but I prefer to refer to her work simply as romance.
Brame was born in Hinckley, England in 1836 to Benjamin and Charlotte Agnes Law. She was only seventeen when she published her first short story. She was married to Philip E. Brame, a jeweler in London with whom she had nine children, of which four lived to adulthood. She lived in various places in England including London, Brighton, and Manchester. She died in her hometown of Hinckley on November 25, 1884 at the age of 48.
During her lifetime her work appeared primarily in story papers. They were reprinted in book form, later in romance series and libraries devoted to her, such as the

    James O'Neill Collection
    Scope / Content Note
The materials in the James O'Neill Collection formed part of a large book collection puchased from O'Neill by the UCSD Library. O'Neill was a book dealer and collector. This collection documents his interest in late nineteenth century serial fiction and short stories. While the bulk of the collection is comprised of manuscripts, there is also ample correspondence from the period. Of special interest is the correspondence included in the Amos R. Wells papers, which offers examples of the relationships between writers, editors, and publishers during the period. The collection is divided into five series: MANUSCRIPTS, COLLECTED LETTERS, MISCELLANEOUS, AMOS R. WELLS PAPERS, and ORIGINALS OF PRESERVATION PHOTOCOPIES. 1: MANUSCRIPTS 2: COLLECTED LETTERS This series consists of letters dating from the late nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century. They are organized alphabetically by correspondent, except in the case of Capt. J.G.B. Adams, who was the addressee of a number of letters. 3: MISCELLANEOUS This series consists of various materials found interspersed in the collection which do not appear related to items in the primary series. Included are missionary pamplets dating from the mid-1800s, and a December 1941 typescript newsletter from the U.S. Naval Air Station in Kodiak, Alaska.
