  • Question by Denis Dooley asked on February 18, 2004, at 11:35 am. What is the origin of the 'Wearing of the Green'?
I have seen more than one explanation. At some point, an invading people forced the existing population to wear the green of the fields and the trees as a sort of humiliation, but then it eventually became a matter of pride. But, what I haven’t heard for sure was whether this was the Normans or the English or an earlier time. Does anyone know the story on this?
  • Answer by Jean contributed on March 11, 2004, at 3:53pm. Last updated on March 11, 2004, at 8:23pm. According to the web site: www.franks.org/fr01068.htm, the song by the title "The Wearing of The Green" was written by a Dubliner, Dion Boucicault (1820-1890). After America's revolution, the Irish thought it was time for their own independence. The color greem became a symbol of sympathy for Irish independence and the British actually began executing persons found wearing anything green. See the lyrics to the son on that web site, too. I haven't been able to verify this statement as fact and I can't find a more exact time-line for the writing of the song.

Irish theatre
The history of Irish theatre begins with the rise of the English administration in Dublin at the start of the 17th century. Over the next 400 years, this small country was to make a disproportionate contribution to drama in English Although there would appear to have been performances of plays on religious themes in Ireland from as early as the 14th century, the first well-documented instance of a theatrical production in Ireland is a staging of Gorboduc presented by Lord Mountjoy Lord Deputy of Ireland in the Great Hall in Dublin Castle . The play had been written by Thomas Sackville and Thomas Norton for the 1561/2 Christmas festivities at the Inner Temple in London and appears to have been selected because it was a story of a divided kingdom descending into anarchy that was applicable to the situation in Ireland at the time of the performance. Mountjoy started a fashion, and private performances became quite commonplace in great houses all over Ireland over the following thirty years. When Thomas Wentworth became Lord Lieutenant in . He wanted to turn Dublin into a true capital and as part of his programme, he planned a theatre for his court. A member of his court

A song from the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
The melody is sometimes heard with the words " Rising of the Moon. Melody:

Green Oh! Paddy, dear, and did you hear
The news that's going round,
The shamrock is forbid by law
To grow on Irish ground.
Saint Patrick's Day no more we'll keep
His color can't be seen For there's a bloody law agin' The wearing of the green. I met with Napper Tandy And he took me by the hand And he said "How's poor old Ireland? And how does she stand?" She's the most distressful country That ever you have seen, They're hanging men and women there For wearing of the green. Then since the color we must wear Is England's cruel red Sure Ireland's sons will n'er forget The blood that they have shed. You may take the shamrock from your hat And cast it on the sod, But 'twill take root and flourish still Tho' underfoot 'tis trod. When the law can stop the blades of grass From growing as they grow, And when the leaves in summer time Their verdure dare not show, Then I will change the color I wear in my caubeen

The Victorian Marionette Theatre
Available November 2004
In this fascinating and colorful book, researcher and performer John McCormick focuses on the marionette world of Victorian Britain between its heyday after 1860 and its waning years from 1895 to 1914. Situating the rich and diverse puppet theatre in the context of entertainment culture, he explores both the aesthetics of these dancing dolls and their sociocultural significance in their life and time.
The history of marionette performances is interwoven with live-actor performances and with the entire gamut of annual fairs, portable and permanent theatres, music halls, magic lantern shows, waxworks, panoramas, and sideshows. McCormick has drawn upon advertisements in the Era , an entertainment paper, between the 1860s and World War I, and articles in the , a paper for showpeople, in the first fifty years of the twentieth century, as well as interviews with descendants of the marionette showpeople and close examinations of many of the surviving puppets.

Small Beginnings
Although there would appear to have been performances of plays on religious themes in Ireland from as early as the 14th century, the first well-documented instance of a theatrical production in Ireland is a staging of Gorboduc presented by Lord Mountjoy Lord Deputy of Ireland in the Great Hall in Dublin Castle .
