FAMOUS PEOPLE Literature ROBERT BURNS (1759 - 1796) JAMES BOSWELL (1740 - 1795)
Born in Edinburgh, James Boswell had a career in law mapped out by his father. After education at a private school, Edinburgh University and Glasgow University, he practised law in the capital city. Boswell longed to live in London and moved there in 1760. It was in London in 1762 that Boswell first met Dr. Samuel Johnson. Boswell was fascinated by the mind of Johnson. He persuaded Johnston to make a tour of Scotland with him and the two men visited Auchinleck in 1773 on their return from the Hebridean Tour. On the death of his father in 1782, James Boswell inherited the family estates at Auchinleck. He moved to Auchinleck where he became a capable and well-liked Laird. For many years Boswell worked on his famous works "Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides, 1785", and "Life of Johnson 1791". Both works received critical acclaim and throughout the 19 th century Boswell's name was famous for producing these works. James Boswell died in London in 1795 a few years after the publication and success of "Life of Johnson".

James's father, Alexander, becomes laird of Auchinleck in Ayrshire, and the family moves there; the family hires as tutor John Dun, who was a capable teacher, whose curriculum included a wide range of literature, and who helped the young James master Latin. John Dun is appointed minister of Auchinleck (through the patronage of Alexander Boswell), and is replace as the boys' tutor by one Joseph Fergusson, who appears to have been something of a failure as a minister; the young James Boswell finds him "completely uncongenial". Myers Literary Guide Centre for Northern Studies JAMES BOSWELL (1740 - 1795) In the building now called White Knights in Spital Tongues, Newcastle, there was a private asylum where Boswell used to visit his mentally unstable brother, John. According to his journals, Boswell was there in May 1775, and again on 12 March 1776, when he reflected that it was better to have one's mind obscured than to be actively unhappy. John was able to recognise him and asked him for money. He then unexpectedly said: 'Take me with you.' Boswell was moved to tears, though he knew John was well looked-after and was in no anguish of mind or body. Return to Index On to next Author

PRENTICE HALL LITERATURE: Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes
James Boswell
Not until the twentieth century did James Boswell rise from the fringes of literary history to take his place as perhaps the greatest biographer in English literature. Best known for his biography of Samuel Johnson, Boswell wrote with vigor, training his eyes now on the picturesque, now on the grotesque. Born into an aristocratic family in Edinburgh, Scotland, Boswell was educated at the University of Glasgow, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Utrecht. Although he received his degree in law and was admitted to the bar in both Scotland and England, Boswell's true passion was literature. His father, a prominent judge, was angered by what he saw as his son's "shallow" values. The extremely sensitive young Boswell interpreted this dissatisfaction as rejection, which led in turn to feelings of inferiority. In an effort to overcome his low self-esteem and at the same time find a suitable father figure, Boswell became a celebrity chaser, seeking out the acquaintanceship of the great men and women of his day. To his credit, many of them became his lifelong friends. Among these friends was Samuel Johnson, who Boswell met while visiting London in 1763. After his acceptance into the prestigious Literary Club, Boswell devoted 30 years to compiling detailed records of Johnson's activities and conversations. From these assorted bits and pieces he distilled his famous work
