In the past he has been dismissed as a 'cultural schizophrenic' but it is now accepted that Scots of his generation had a very troubled identity. He began a letter to the Public Advertiser by saying, "I am by birth a North Briton, as a Scotchman must now be called...". Political Union a generation before Boswell's birth had meant that institutions and power had transferred to London and Westminster - if a person wanted fame and glory they would have to travel south. The son of a respected Judge, Boswell studied for the law and began practising in Edinburgh in 1766. He made frequent trips to London, and it was on one of these visits that he met Samuel Johnson in 1763 in a bookshop. This was the year that he had made an extensive tour of Europe and had decided that his ambitions lay in the direction of writing. He hoped to win Johnson's agreement to write his biography. He persuaded Johnson to accompany him on a tour of Scotland: Johnson would write an account of the trip while Boswell would collect information for the biography. Boswell's own diaries turned into

literature
Boswell, James (1740-1795)
The life of Samuel Johnson.
(2 vols)
London: Printed by Henry Baldwin, 1791.
Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson is unquestionably one of the great biographies in the English language. Indeed, in recent decades there has been much scholarly debate over wherein its greatness lies. Scholarly interest was also aroused earlier last century when a large number of hitherto unknown pages of original manuscript from the work were found, first in an ebony cabinet in 1927 and again in a stable loft in 1940. For most readers however, it is simply a work to be enjoyed and quoted. (See the caption for Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy

Addison, Joseph
The eldest son of a cleric, Addison eventually found himself at Oxford (Queen's and Magdalen). He wrote favourable (whether commissioned, or not) articles concerning certain powerful people and their works; he was duly rewarded with a pension of £300 which allowed Addison to travel extensively throughout the continent for four years. With the victory at Blenheim , in 1704, Addison was commissioned to write The Campaign and this led to further political patronage; he was appointed as a Commissioner of Excise Taxes (the only significant taxes they had in those days). The job as a commissioner, presumably, took little of Addison's time and he was left to pursue his writing. While he had contributed to the Tatler (started by Steele in 1709), Addison started his own paper in 1711, the Spectator ("In the Spectator may be traced the foundations of all that is sound and healthy in modern English thought."
