Whoever makes a poor beer is transferred to the dung-hill. Edict, City of Danzig, 11th Century Beer drinkin don't do half the harm as love-makin. Anonymous Fermentation and civilization are inseparable John Ciardi (1916-1986) Give me a woman who truly loves beer, and I will conquer the world. Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941) He who drinks beer sleeps well. He who sleeps well cannot sin. He who does not sin goes to heaven. Amen. Unknown German Monk It is better to think of church in the ale-house than to think of the ale-house in church. Martin Luther (1483-1546) The selling of bad beer is a crime against Christian love. Law, the City of Augsburg, 13th Century It is my design to die in the brew-house; let ale be placed to my mouth when I am expiring, that when the choirs of angels come, they may say, "Be God propitious to this drinker." Saint Columbanus, A.D. 612 From man's sweat and God's love, beer came into the world. Saint Arnoldus God made yeast, as well as dough, and loves fermentation just as dearly as he loves vegetation. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) There are more old drunks than old doctors. Anonymous Of doctors and medicines we have in plenty more than enough...what you may, for the Love of God, send is some large quantity of beer. Dispatch from the Colony, New South Wales, 1854 The Puritanical nonsense of excluding children and therefore to some extent women from pubs has turned these places into mere boozing shops instead of the family gathering places that they ought to be. George Orwell (1903-1950) Beer makes you feel the way you ought to feel without beer. Henry Lawson Wine is but single broth, ale is meat, drink, and cloth. 16th Century English Proverb At social parties no gentleman ever thought of leaving the table sober; the host would have considered it a slight on his hospitality. F.W. Hackwood, comment on manners, 18th Century England Beer..."a high and mighty liquor" Julius Caesar Of beer an enthusiast has said that it could never be bad, but that some brands might be better than others... A.A. Milne Beer, of course, is actually a depressant, but poor people will never stop hoping otherwise. Curt Vonnegut, Jr., Hocus Pocus, 1990 He is not deserving the name of Englishman who speaketh against ale, that is, good ale. George Borrow (1803-1881) Ere's to English women an' a quart of English beer. Rudyard Kipling There's nothing as heartening as the sight of an empty pub in the morning, the shelves full and everything spick and span before the barbarian hordes come in. Them that drinks bottles spoil the look of the shelves but draught is a different story - you never see the barrel going down. Patrick McGinley No poems can live long or please that are written by water-drinkers. Horace 65-8 B.C.

A Virtual Stroll Around the Walls of Chester
Chester's Visitors through the Ages: 6 The Rev. John Wesley , tireless preacher and traveller and the father of Methodism was a frequent visitor to Chester- indeed, one of the earliest nonconformist places of worship, the 'Octagon Chapel' was built here in 1764. Previous to its erection, Wesley was happy to preach in the open air, as he recorded here in June 1752:
Mon. 22nd.- We walked round the walls of the city, which are something more than a mile and three quarters in circumference. But there are many vacant spaces within the walls, many gardens, and a good deal of pasture ground; I believe Newcastle-upon-Tyne, within the walls, contains at least a third more houses than Chester.
I preached at six in the evening in the square to a vast multitude, rich and poor. The far greater part, the gentry in particular, were seriously and deeply attentive; though a few of the rabble, most of them drunk, labored much to make a disturbance. One might already perceive a great increase of earnestness in the generality of the hearers."

Spiritwalk Library Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.net Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts). It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia

PHILIP WARD'S A LIFETIME'S READING THE WORLD'S 500 GREATEST BOOKS Philip Ward (1938-) is a librarian, scholar, editor and author of more than 50 books. His A Lifetime's Reading: The World's 500 Greatest Books provides an ambitious plan to guide reader's through the great books. He explains his purpose in writing the book as follows: " Like most professional librarians, I have at one time or another glanced across a library to see a man or woman of eighteen to twenty daunted - even bewildered - by the sheer richness of the library treasures that are waiting to be enjoyed, the great minds to be understood, the poet's voices to be heard, the characters of fiction to be encountered. My heart has been touched by the magnitude of their choice. I long to offer them the plays of Euripides and the stories of Isaac Babel, the love songs of Dante and the wisdom of Mencius. But I know help must be given only when sought. A maturity that is bullied into life is not worth having." "So I have written this book - fruit of a lifetime's reading happily not quite over - in the hope that it will serve as a literary guide to readers looking forward to many thousands of hours of pleasure." The book is divided into fifty chapters, or 'years' to provide a discipline for the reader, but Philip Ward notes that the books can be read in any order. In the following tables we use the yearly groupings, but have, of necessity, abbreviated the rich bibliographic information that the author provides. For each title cited, the author has provided a brief but consistently insightful description of the book. All serious readers should consult the book and enjoy Philip Ward's exceptional scholarship.
