Because of his precocious lingustic skills George Borrow in his youth became the prodigy of Wiliam Taylor . Borrow depicts the scholar and advocate of German Romantic literature in his semi-autobiographical novel Lavengro (1851). In his recollection of his early youth in Norwich some thirty years earlier, Borrow depicts an old man (Taylor) and a young man (Borrow) discussing the merits of German literature, including

History
Gypsies played a major role in the development of flamenco. Historians generally agree that they originated in the area of Northern India and Pakistan and travelled a northern route towards the Balkans. However, there are those who maintain that Gypsies reached Andalucia from Egypt after sailing along the coast of Africa Ref This is despite the lack of any real evidence. The Spanish Gypsies had no Arabic words in their vocabulary. The implication of this belief is that they may have accompanied the invading Muslims in 711AD.
Regardless of which theory you believe in, gypsies traveled far and wide in their wanderings and made a home for themselves in many countries including the Middle East. Since there were no real records to prove or disprove their true origins, Egyptian Gypsies themselves came to believe they were descended from the Pharaohs. This is a legend to which many of their songs still refer - as a result of which they were called Egyptians , or "Gypcians" in English; while, in old Spanish, gitano was simply a way of saying "Egyptian".

One of the more strange places where Vortigern is reputed to have built his 'city' is the wilderness of North Wales. Here, in the absolute inaccessible highland of Gwynedd, he built his fortress to escape from his persuers. At least, this is told to us by 'Nennius': Historia Brittonum, chapter 40 .. Having, to no purpose, travelled far and wide, they came at length to a province called Guenet; and having surveyed the mountains of Heremus , they discovered, on the summit of one of them, a situation, adapted to the construction of a citadel. Upon this, the wise men said to the king, "Build here a city; for, in this place, it will ever be secure against the barbarians."
