William and Catherine
Booth "Never!" Catherine cried form the first row of the balcony, before her husband could utter a word. William Booth, a Methodist minister, had been faulted for welcoming the poor, ne’er-do-wells and street toughs to his services. Church leaders wanted him to promise that the welcome mat would be rolled up and put away. Catherine answered for him. Little wonder that she wrote, "The more I see of fashionable religion, the more I despise it." William Booth was born in Nottingham, England, into a home that knew the bitter taste of poverty. His father died when he was fourteen, and William became a pawnbroker's apprentice. He never forgot the anxiety, the bleakness and, above all, the degradation of penury. He would eventually startle Britain with his book, In Darkest England and the Way Out Yet Booth was never tempted to become a secular programmer of social change: he was always the evangelist. Converted at age fifteen in a Wesleyan chapel, he ever after wanted only to declare that the Word of Truth which brings Life to its hears and sets them on the Way of discipleship. Ordained a Methodist minister, he was soon dismissed by church authorities as a "reformer" and was stripped of his clergy-standing. He found a temporary new home among New Connexion Methodists, but a few years of "settled ministry" convinced him that this was not his vocation. Together with his wife, Catherine Mumford, he began conducting preaching missions in Wales, Cornwall, and the Midlands – areas that had suffered the worst economic and human blight in the shadow-side of industrialization. Once again, church authorities attempted to appoint him to a settled ministry. By now he had wearied of their inability to recognize his calling. He left. In 1865 the Christian Mission opened in East London. In 1878 it was renamed The Salvation Army.

March 10 ~  Measure of His Surrender Sacred Contracts
"The greatness of a man's power is the m e a s u r e of his surrender." ~ William Booth Amid the slums of London, England , Methodist minister William Booth (1829–1912) founded the Salvation Army in 1865 to wage spiritual warfare on poverty without formal religious services. "I must assert in the most unqualified way that it is primarily and mainly for the sake of saving the soul that I seek the salvation of the body," said Booth. With uniforms, flags, and ranks, his goal was to preach the gospel and meet human needs without discrimination. "He who helps in the saving of others, Saves himself as well," observed German epic poet Hartmann Von Aue. On this day in 1880, Booth established the first U.S. Salvation Army in New York City. Like its London counterpart, the mission became a quasi military organization. The leader was called "general" and followers were "soldiers." The war to help mankind continued. In 1904, Booth's daughter Evangeline (1865-1950) was named the U.S. commander, the organization's first woman general. She handed out donuts during World War I and operated soup kitchens during the Depression. Today the Salvation Army operates in over 103 countries and offers a range of social programs to help others: aid to children , halfway houses, shelters for the homeless, food for the hungry, and relief for disaster victims.

"A Vision of the Lost"
by William Booth
William Booth
Founder of the Salvation Army n one of my recent journeys , as I gazed from the coach window, I was led into a train of thought concerning the condition of the multitudes around me. They were living carelessly in the most open and shameless rebellion against God, without a thought for their eternal welfare. As I looked out of the window, I seemed to see them all... millions of people all around me given up to their drink and their pleasure, their dancing and their music, their business and their anxieties, their politics and their troubles. Ignorant- willfully ignorant in many cases- and in other instances knowing all about the truth and not caring at all. But all of them, the whole mass of them, sweeping on and up in their blasphemies and devilries to the Throne of God. While my mind was thus engaged, I had a vision.
I saw a dark and stormy ocean. Over it the black clouds hung heavily; through them every now and then vivid lightening flashed and loud thunder rolled, while the winds moaned, and the waves rose and foamed, towered and broke, only to rise and foam, tower and break again.
In that ocean I thought I saw myriads of poor human beings plunging and floating, shouting and shrieking, cursing and struggling and drowning; and as they cursed and screamed they rose and shrieked again, and then some sank to rise no more.

Booth identified him as the chief enemy, challenged his monopoly of "all the best tunes", and used the big drum to deafen him. His Army spread throughout the world and he was responsible for a whole network of social and regenerative agencies; Lord Wolseley once described him as the world’s greatest organizer. By the time the century closed, Booth had won his fight; freeman of London, honorary doctor of Oxford, guest at the coronation of Edward VII and of the United States Senate, which he opened with prayer. In 1912 "the General laid down his sword" - and people of all ranks were among the thousands of funeral mourners.

" WILLIAM BOOTH " On April 9,1865, a 36 year old Englishman by the name of William Booth declared war on the powers of darkness by founding the Salvation Army. One of the most effective weapons in General Booth's arsenal was fervent prayer. It was not unusual for Booth to hold "an all night of prayer" when he came to preach the Word of God. People would flood the altars every where he went, and the worst of sinners were saved, saloons were closed and entire cities were shaken. "The power of God was wonderfully manifest in the meetings . . . people were frequently, struck down, overwhelmed with a sense of the presence and power of God." Booth's success attracted not only supporters but also enemies. Those who served in the Army were pelted with hot coals, sprayed with tar and burning sulphur, beat, stoned and even kicked to death in the streets. The Salvation Army resisted their enemies with a cheerful "God bless you", and a prayer. General Booth, himself was often in the thick of it. When spit on during the Midlands tour, Booth encouraged his fellow soldiers, "Don't rub it off - it's a medal!" Night after night Booth would come home bleeding and bruised after being attacked for preaching in the slums of England. His wife Catherine could inspire in him. She encouraged him, "if we get tired we had better go and be done with, anything is better than a dead church." After praying with Catherine he would rise from his knees armed with fresh courage and hope. His TEARS, drew him and followers witnessed a mighty revival. He made hundreds 'till thousands men knelt in silent prayer within minutes in every sermon, he led.

Knowledge of Salvation Army
William Booth 1829 - 1912
Beginning of Salvation Army
In 1865, William Booth was invited to hold a series of evangelistic meetings in the east end of London. He set up a tent in a Quaker graveyard and his services became an instant succes. This proved to be the end of his wanderings as a independent traveling evangelist. His renown as a religious leader spread throught London. His followers were a vigorous group dedicated to fight for the souls of men and women.
Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers and drunkars were among Booth´s first converts to Christianity. His congregations were desperate poor. He preached hope and salvation. His aim was to lead them to Christ and to link them to a church for further spiritual guidance. Even though they were converted, churches did not accept Booth´s followers because of what they had been. Booth gave their lives direction in a spiritual manner and put them to work to save others who were like themselves. They too preached and sang in the streets as a living testimony to the power of God.
In 1867, Booth had only 10 full-time workers. By 1874, the members had grown to 1 000 volunteers and 42 evangelists. They served under the name "The Christian Mission." Booth assumed the title of a General Superintendent. His followers called him "General." Known as the "Hallelujah Army," the converts spread out of the east end of London into neighboring areas and then to other cities.

William Booth 1829 - 1912
