What can the captivity narratives tell us about the culture of the people who wrote or read these stories? Look at several narratives and see if you can discern any difference in the interests of the authors and their audiences. You may want to note the dates of the publications as a way of helping you make sense of what you're reading. You'll find information about capitivity narratives at the following sites: Cultural Readings - Colonial Fictions... - Captivities This online exhibition at the University of Pennsylvania library allows you to take a close look at the title pages of several captivity narratives. Bookshelf Women Writers Julie Danneberg's " Women Writers of the West " follows other books about Western women. Mining town women, artistsall come life although their fame may have faded. Although this book is aimed at middle-school age girls, the stories transcend gender and age. Jessie Benton Fremont, Louise Clappe, Mary Hallock Foote, Helen Hunt Jackson and Gertrude Bonnin are five fascinating womenas vivid and colorful as any fictional characters. Each represents a way of writing, thinking and exploring the events of her time. FRL: When I think of Western women writers, Willa Cather comes to mind. But she is not in your book. Many of these women are not well known. How did you find them? And why did you choose them? Julie: In going through different compilations of women at that time, I would find them in footnotes. I wanted to be able to get my hands on their writings. Some were so out of print you couldn’t access them. I wrote down all the women I knew, like Willa Cather and Mary Austin. Later, I discarded Willa because so much was done on her. Also I wanted all kinds of writings. Helen Hunt Jackson had two kinds of writing (fiction and non-fiction). And then, I looked for minority women; I only found Gertrude Bonnin (a Sioux woman). Also, they had to have writing readily available. I wanted it to be contemporary so that people could access that person’s writings.

Why I Am Pagan by Zitkala-Sa
(Gertrude Bonnin) (1876-1938)
Written in 1902. When the spirit swells my breast I love to roam leisurely among the green hills; or sometimes, sitting on the brink of the murmuring Missouri, I marvel at the great blue overhead. With half closed eyes I watch the huge cloud shadows in their noiseless play upon the high bluffs opposite me, while into my ear ripple the sweet, soft cadences of the river's song. Folded hands lie in my lap, for the time forgot. My heart and I lie small upon the earth like a grain of throbbing sand. Drifting clouds and tinkling waters, together with the warmth of a genial summer day, bespeak with eloquence the loving Mystery round about us. During the idle while I sat upon the sunny river brink, I grew somewhat, though my response be not so clearly manifest as in the green grass fringing the edge of the high bluff back of me.
At length retracing the uncertain footpath scaling the precipitous embankment, I seek the level lands where grow the wild prairie flowers. And they, the lovely little folk, soothe my soul with their perfumed breath.

Final project: Native American Women’s Historical Timeline
Reading Cora Agatucci’s “Women’s Historical timeline” [http://www.cocc.edu/cagatucci/classes/ws101/wstml/wstmlTOC.htm ] was eye opening to say the least; I discovered women and events I didn’t know about before. It was amazing to find out so much about the female history, I didn’t realize how ignorant I was about women’s rolls in shaping our world. Thanks to Cora I now look for things discovered or invented by women. However there was one group of women that were conspicuous in their absence from the timeline. A group very near and dear to my heart, Native American women. These women have gotten short changed by most historians, even more so than their native brothers, in the telling of America’s history. It’s sad that we may never know about some of the world’s greatest leaders, because they were women from a conquered people. Since I will be working to change the curriculum taught in the U.S. to include the native histories, I have decided that this would be a great place to start. It hasn’t been easy finding American Indian women leaders, something that is very disappointing for me, but I did find some and will continue to look even after this paper is done. In all cases I tried to verify the accounts given, and the names of people involved, I was not always successful, but felt it was important to still include the sources regardless. Many times native histories are passed down only among the people they pertain to and aren’t included in any written history. Some of the papers were the only research done on the particular topic, so there was no corresponding information.
